#1: OT: 24 hour supermarket = 24 hour off licence?

Posted on 2006-07-23 01:52:35 by elyob

It's just too bloody hot and no alcohol in the flat. Have had a couple or
so, but am wondering whether a quick cycle to New Malden = 24 hour Tesco
off-licence.

Probably can't be bothered, but maybe the Tesco Express in Tolworth does
beer.

Any FOAK appreciated.

Not since 24 hr licenencing came in... IIRC a lot of it was granted to
supermarkets.

I guess so, otherwise every pissed c**t in the world would drive down there.
Now, is there a pizza place in Surbiton that delivers cold beer as well as
pizza? Not that I care about the pizza.

Oh well, looks like a green tea or hot chocolate for me then. My general
plan of keeping no spirits and beer in the place works generaly well. Except
the weekend.

I have a theory that for every degree above 25° (during the day), all pubs
with gardens or by the river should be required to stay open an extra 15
minutes. This rule could only apply on a Thu/Fri & Sat. But I think it has
legs.

Last time I drove to the UK I needed some "basic supplies" so wentr to ASDA
at Spondon, near Derby.

I arrived at about 1.30am and asked the shelf stacker if I could buy booze.
They looked at me like I was mad and said words to the effect "Of course you
can, now we have 24 hour licensing, you dopey cunt. Where have you been
living? Under a rock?" Which wasn't far from the truth...

Don't drink alcohol and go for isotonic drinks if it is real hot (I
mean, over 30 celsius all day long)

Why would we want to do that? You can't get pissed on isotonic drinks.

Yup, just checked the Tesco website. Still 10-4 on a Sunday, so close at
10pm on a Saturday night. Good thing I decided to go to bed instead, rather
than trust my half cut decision making.

Depends where you live. In Scotland there are no Sunday trading
restricitions so the likes of Asda open 24/7. In England & Wales they can
only open 6 hours on a Sunday.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5152800.stm has a statement from the
government earlier this month stating that they have rejected an approach
by some retailers to remove the restrictions.

Being on permanent holiday/retired, it hadn't even occured to me that it was
Saturday yesterday......

I honestly don't know the date/day/time most of the time. The closest I can
get is it's either light or dark and that's about it..... And that doesn't
help at the moment as "light" covers about 4.30am to 10pm ish

If no one does such thing 600 miles around Paul Carmichael, it means
that the result is probably shite...

For those wanting to experiment, try "calimocho" or cola with red wine
(Mecca-cola or any white brand cola and plonk is preferred). Being
pre-pissed helps with the first sip. Being younger than 20 and out of
money helps as well.
