#1: Easy Rider gas tank cash-stash fiasco

Posted on 2005-08-14 20:58:01 by dnhppr

You know what I did, man? I tried that Peter Fonda trick of rolling up
cash into a clear plastic tube, corking it and stringing it into my
tank.

You know what happened, man? For starters I lost the end of the tube
and had to use needle-noses to pull it out of the tank. A spark could
have caused the whole thing to flash! I should have found something
plastic but there wasn't time where I was.

And get this, man. Once I got the danged tube out of the tank I
noticed the cork (should have used a cap with threads) had absorbed
gas and the tube walls were also oozing it. Know your materials, kids!
The cash inside had gone fumey in a bad way.

To make matters worse, getting the stinky cash out of the tube was no
picnic. I had to get a thin clothes hanger and make a hook to snag the
tight rolls of dough, one by one. It took much longer to get them out
intact than it did to stash them.

As you might guess, the first time I dragged the tube out of the tank
was the last. The displacement was costing some cruising range too. I
finally got all the bills out and dried them in the Sun for 3 hours
but I couldn't shake the gas impregnation thing.

I almost felt like burning them but that was no option. So I ended up
using some old film cans (the metal kind) to seal them up and stored
them on my person like sane folk would. I spent them in stanky
convenience stores so the fumes wouldn't draw much attention.

In the final analysis, you want to know what I think, man? I think
it's a crackpot idea, that's what I think! How about a little of that?
I think it's a crackpot idea!

D.H.

P.S. This was hard-earned machine shop dough, not Pura Vida cash.
Riding with ill-gotten money can doom a man.

One look at the idiotic LSD chopper Peter Fonda was riding should have
been lesson enough for anyone not to mimic anything done in that
Hollywood "epic"!

Two doped up idiots on unrideable choppers going nowhere in a movie
without a plot.

Deep heavy symbolism.....ooooooh!

However, in your favor, there are those that would probably try it

Hey man, you missed my reasoning. The film cans sealed in the gasoline
smell after I pulled them out of the bogus tube. Would you put gassy
bills in your nice pigskin? I carry my wallet in normal times.

Also, man, in the movie they had tons of cash so he was paranoid about
it and his paranoia led to a crackpot idea, like throwing down his
watch. No matter how out there you are it's good to know the relative
time.

>
>I'm pretty amazed that you actually had to try it, to figure that out.
>However, in your favor, there are those that would probably try it
>again, in order to get it right.

I got 1/2" clear tubing on a roll at OSH hardware but I didn't ask
about permeability. It's all about seepage, man, but it still could
have all been the cork's fault. I should have bought a fancy rubber
plug. I don't know if the gas just got in that way but the whole
inside of the tube was shot somehow.

Yeah, those choppers would have been a harsh ride across country in
real life and they only filmed them at 20 mph in many scenes. Your
arms would fall off from the extension pretty fast!

But as for the film not being cool, you're off-base, man. It just
didn't click with you. I wouldn't have tossed my watch on the ground
but the point was there is rarely freedom without a price. I think the
baddest cat was Porky Pig with his Monument Valley campfire line:
"...a small thing to ask" (respect for the ancient dead). I think even
then Fonda knew they'd blown it.

Hey, name one other film where you hear gems like "you do you own
thing in your own time..." or "I've got an idea, let's go outside."
There wasn't a single 5 minutes without some understated epic line
that you just don't hear in other movies. These days they have to
fake-derive that stuff or pay some twit bucks to invent it and it just
doesn't come off the same way because it isn't REAL, man.

I almost forgot Jack's "neet! neet! neet!" (mimicking chopper-starter
on film crew) and "Individual Freedom" rant (best dig at Republi-cons
I've heard in ages). The DVD voiceover explains where most of that
came from, like "D.H Lawrence" and "Indians" (they had visited sites
related to those people during scene checks).

But man, the guy who thought up the tank-stash concept was ignoring
his left brain. It could have been Fonda himself. I think they were
all on real drugs or booze during the filming.

C'mon now folks, let's all be real. How many of us have never uttered
the classic words "Hey y'all, watch this.." and regretted it. Case in point,
does anyone in the group happen to have an ex-spouse? Hmmm, seemed like a
good idea at the time, didn't know what a train wreck that was gonna be. You
live and learn.
Just my opinion...

Know your materials indeed! Your best bet would be to use
Polytetraflouroethylene, aka Teflon.
That stuff is so inert, nothing will disolve it.

Would work to smuggle goods across the border.

Can't remember normal times ....

Apparently, he no longer finds his full set of prismatic Sailor Moon
cards fulfilling.

It's been some six years, and this pitiable sad sack still can't let go.
He has been coming into rmh occasionally for the last 6 years, trying
to get someone to respond to him. He usually fails, which is his norm.

Google this group for:

the one whose name we do not mention and "tatami".

the one whose name we do not mention and "should give up".

the one whose name we do not mention and "infallible".

Enjoy.

Well, it *was* a passing fad ... Unlike Pokemon ...
