#1: Paging the Pedants: And anyone else that enjoys arguing over fuck all :-)

Posted on 2006-07-23 20:45:19 by Donegal Paul

Where i live you basically enter a cul de sac and as you do, theres a bend
to the right (sharp right)(A) then sweeps slightly to the right (B) before
becoming a sharp left again (C) and carrying on. At B there is also a road
(another dead end) that joins.

OK, now before i go further:

1. No, you probably DGAF.
2. Yes, I can respect that.
3. Yes, if you tell me YDGAF I may ignore that reply, or I may tell you
IDGAF that YDGAF[1]
4. To the majority of you the whole reason for this post, or the contents
within, will be thought of as a complete waste of time, pedantic and
possibly even churlish.
5. IDGAF
6. On with the post.

OK, so, I'm returning home on the scooter, approaching A at approximately
25mph, slow for A to about 15 then sweep round into B and theres a vehicle
parked and facing me on my side of the road.
I do the usual, i.e what you should do in such a situation (having already
anticipated it) and slow further, but this does not negate that however
slowly i approach said vehicle, it will inevitably force me into the wrong
side of the road approaching the blind bend C and knowing the people that
live on my road over the last 12 to 13 years, I can expect / anticipate that
a vehicle could come round that bend from the other side at greater than 15
to 20 mph [2]

So, this time, and i dont know why, it's irked me ever so slightly, so I
park up the scooter, (noting the 4 empty spaces in the layby less than 40
yards from the parked car on B) and have a wander over to the house to ask
about it.

So, I have a chat to the bloke, (moved in about 5 months ago) and while I
ask about the parking of said vehicle and ask if it could be possible that
it be parked round the corner, (politely I may add)[3] he decides to
escalate things, blabbing on about no yellow lines (true) not obstructing
the opposite dropped kerb (true) etc.
I point out that i agree but that i would appreciate if it could be parked
where it causes less risk to the residents that have to negotiate a blind
bend on the wrong side of the road. Again he starts on about me being a
jumped up so and so etc and in the middle the female friend (who owns the
car ) jumps in being all high and mighty and claiming to be ex plod [4]and
how she can ring up the police, get one out right now to tell me that its
not an obstruction etc etc.

I call her bluff.
She rings local plods who tell her to move the vehicle off the
pavement(illegal I know, as does she) but as theres no yellow lines then she
can park there as its residential etc, despite the fact that she's within 15
feet (if that) of a blind bend and is arguably (perhaps pedantically) posing
a risk.
Nevertheless, I as a scooterist / motorist do feel it poses a risk where
none need exist if she simply used any one of the 4 free spaces only 35 to
40 yards away.

Anyway, it carries on with my repeated attempts at trying to ask her to
simply be considerate, but her bumming on about being ex plod so we agree to
disagree.[5]

So, basically, I'm left with a few choices.

I can
either petition the council for yellow lines in the area, which i dont
particularly want to do
or ignore it all completly and hope I never do actually come a cropper in my
proposed possible scenario
or ............ thats it really:-(

[1] Depending on how the mood takes me.
[2] There have been more than one times where they have come round at 30+
[3] No really!
[4] Despite asking several times she refused to tell me which area of police
she worked, certainly didnt appear to be traffic though by how the
conversation went!
[5] There were however slight interjections where she did call me ignorant,
get a life etc which i felt that i just had to reply, for example where i
reprimanded her in a probably conceited way for saying Jesus Christ in front
of the child that was present. The irony of me accusing her of blasphemy was
not lost on me, however, when she said she had permission to say Jesus
Christ.....................well, it was like a worm on a hook, I had to ask
who had given her permission, and that while it may be ok to utter the
lord's name in prayer, I doubt that she had some form of special
dispensation from Our Lord to utter his name in the manner she had done.
I'm pretty sure this is when her "dealing with difficult people" training
started to crumble, and i was enjoying myself too much to let go.[6]
[6] Yes, I know , waaaaaaaaaaay past churlish, but hey ho.

It is an obstruction.
Parking ANYWHERE on the public highway can be considered an obstruction.

Getting anybody to do something about it is a different matter however.

agreed, and it wouldn't have mattered how many times i reiterated it to her

Of course, my asking her if that made *her* right just because everyone else

atmosphere of hate and have your scooter trashed by pikey cunts when you

People are wankers aren't they. I was at a service station earlier.
Pretty busy. A guy fills up, moves forward to let the following car get
a go on the pump and goes to get out of his car.

The following chav piloted car can't quite get to the pump 'cos the guy
who's just filled up hasn't moved forwards far enough.

Now, knowing what we know of human nature which strategy is more likely
to get the guy to move further forwards?

a) A cheery thankyou for moving forwards, but would it be possible to
bump up another 4 feet, please, mate, ta, thanks. Oh and a smile.

b) Hooting the horn while shouting "shift forward you w**ker, *&%,

I won't bother to mention which technique our chav twat chose but it
quite understandably lead to the guy leaving his car un touched,
wandering nonchalantly into the petrol station to pay, browsing a few

What a chav prick. I am all for asking politely for favours and expecting a
"no" as the answer. If it's "yes", I'm a happy, grateful bunny. If "no", I
don't start twatting on about it or make a scene (like your chav twat or

Just to be clear, asuming the OP's version is correct then he did
politely ask for a favour.

I'm sure if the guy had politely said "Nice to meet you, I'll try to
park less twattishly a bit, but no promises.".

So you politely told him he or his friend had parked like a twat. A good way
to start an argument if that was your intention.

You should have told him people down the road drive up and down like twats
and you've seen cars parked where his is get damaged as a result. Then
you're pointing out his error in a spirit of good neighbourliness that
doesn't challenge him to an argument over his parking or thinking abilities,
which will quickly degenerate into a handbag fight, as here.

He will make it his business to park there forever now.

What do they use yellow paint near kerbs for? What are "No Parking" signs

Are you familiar with the implication of the term "historical data"? Read

>What do they use yellow paint near kerbs for? What are "No Parking" signs

You missed the magic word "right".

About the only right you have on the Queens Highway is to be forced into
the adjacent hedges and ditches by passing social superiors. Unless you
are some thieving scrote riding someone else's bike with no helmet, then
you can do whatever you like and no cunt will even try to stop you.
Which rather suggests that scrotes are your social betters and you
really should resent that.

Ok, I'm not a lawyer so I tend to live by the law ('part from the speed on
roads bit :-). I understand what you're getting at. Both sides have
"rights" though so you have to look for something outwith that.

"Martin Coogan" said to "Donegal Paul"
> <snip>
>> So, I have a chat to the bloke, (moved in about 5 months ago) and while I
>> ask about the parking of said vehicle and ask if it could be possible
>> that it be parked round the corner, (politely I may add)[3] he decides to
>> escalate things, blabbing on about no yellow lines (true) not obstructing
>> the opposite dropped kerb (true) etc.
>> I point out that i agree but that i would appreciate if it could be
>> parked where it causes less risk to the residents that have to negotiate
>> a blind bend on the wrong side of the road. Again he starts on about me
>> being a jumped up so and so etc and in the middle the female friend (who
>> owns the car ) jumps in being all high and mighty and claiming to be ex
>> plod [4]and how she can ring up the police, get one out right now to tell
>> me that its not an obstruction etc etc.
>
> So you politely told him he or his friend had parked like a twat. A good
> way to start an argument if that was your intention.

First, it was not my intention at all.
Second, youre the one using words like twat and making it look inflammatory.
I said"i would appreciate if it could be parked where it causes less risk
to the residents that have to negotiate a blind bend on the wrong side of
the road."

>
> You should have told him people down the road drive up and down like twats

> you're pointing out his error in a spirit of good neighbourliness that
> doesn't challenge him to an argument over his parking or thinking
> abilities, which will quickly degenerate into a handbag fight, as here.

Hadnt thought of that one re the damage to his car, still, hindsight and all
that.
Again though, my whole approach was very friendly, I wasnt pointing out
mistakes or saying he was a twat or he was thoughtless, i was very polite.

>
> He will make it his business to park there forever now.

Youre probably right, he's probably that petty to do so, but theres nothing
i can do about it so fuck it.

"of" is the missing word.

>
> "Martin Coogan" said to "Donegal Paul"
>> <snip>
>>> So, I have a chat to the bloke, (moved in about 5 months ago) and while
>>> I ask about the parking of said vehicle and ask if it could be possible
>>> that it be parked round the corner, (politely I may add)[3] he decides
>>> to escalate things, blabbing on about no yellow lines (true) not
>>> obstructing the opposite dropped kerb (true) etc.
>>> I point out that i agree but that i would appreciate if it could be
>>> parked where it causes less risk to the residents that have to negotiate
>>> a blind bend on the wrong side of the road. Again he starts on about me
>>> being a jumped up so and so etc and in the middle the female friend (who
>>> owns the car ) jumps in being all high and mighty and claiming to be ex
>>> plod [4]and how she can ring up the police, get one out right now to
>>> tell me that its not an obstruction etc etc.
>>
>> So you politely told him he or his friend had parked like a twat. A good
>> way to start an argument if that was your intention.
>
> First, it was not my intention at all.
> Second, youre the one using words like twat and making it look
> inflammatory.
> I said"i would appreciate if it could be parked where it causes less risk
> to the residents that have to negotiate a blind bend on the wrong side of
> the road."

With an implied "you twat" tacked on the end :-)

>>
>> You should have told him people down the road drive up and down like
>> twats and you've seen cars parked where his is get damaged as a result.
>> Then you're pointing out his error in a spirit of good neighbourliness
>> that doesn't challenge him to an argument over his parking or thinking
>> abilities, which will quickly degenerate into a handbag fight, as here.
>
> Hadnt thought of that one re the damage to his car, still, hindsight and
> all that.

Quite. (with implied "you twat") :-)

> Again though, my whole approach was very friendly, I wasnt pointing out
> mistakes or saying he was a twat or he was thoughtless, i was very polite.

Yebbut despite the friendly polite approach, you doorstepped him and
criticised his parking. So it's a challenge, innit? So he's got to decide if
he takes shit from some unknown git, or not. He chose not, as would many.

>>
>> He will make it his business to park there forever now.
>
> Youre probably right, he's probably that petty to do so, but theres
> nothing i can do about it so fuck it.

As you rightly say. Neighbours are, without exception, funny cunts and best
avoided, in the best British tradition.

Donegal Paul says...
> "Grimly Curmudgeon"said We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the
> desert, when the
> > drugs began to take hold. I remember "Donegal Paul"
> saying something like:

> >>So, you'd be even less reasonable than these ones then, hmmm interesting.
> >>So, is that just becasuse you cant hold your own in a verbal discussion?
> >
> > It's because he's from Livingston, what do you expect?
>
> Dont know where it is, though I know Ill never bother to knock on a door
> there.

They don't have doors in Livingston, they've all been stolen.
