#1: 07 Changes

Posted on 2006-07-17 23:45:12 by JohnK

Hey everyone. It's 90 degrees in the shade here in PA A round of your
favorite - on me.

I don't post here very often and I know somehow I'm goona catch some
flack on this. I'm trying to get some initial feedback on the newly
announced changes in the 07 lineup, most importantly for those who
haven't seen the Harley web site yet, a new TC 96 engine mated with a 6
speed tranny on all models (cep't Sporty's).

I'm not trying for a flame war here and there is a selfish motivation
for my asking. I'm just about to close a deal on an 04 Ultra with
3000 miles on it - and I have a 2000 FXDWG as my current ride. I'm now
in a bit of a quandry as to how to juggle this all around.

I'm curious what you guys think forcing the new TC96 Engine combined
with 6 speed tranny will do to the whole market. I know my dealer is
gonna tell me it's the greatest thing to ever happen to mankind. I'm
looking for opinions of riders, not sellers.

I was around for the Evo./Twin Cam change over in 99. That one I could
somehow justify because it seemed the TC88 did address quite a few
problem areas of the Evo. (in a relative sort of way). This move, I
see more as a forced obsolescence maneuver and a way to drive down the
value of everything pre-07, with no real gains. The TC 96 will have to
drink more fuel and I'm not convinced the extra gear will compensate for
that. I also understand that oxygen sensors or other expensive work
arounds on the EFI will be necessary for any engine and/or exhaust work.
I know that's not all Harley's fault but it's still a part of the new
package.

I know it's a new model year and new prices always go up and used prices
always drop. Just curious if there are any learned opinions on this
rather significant move and how you see the used bike market heading.
This seems a little quick and pointless to me. Or am I missing
something legit?

Opinions, comments (nasty or nice)? Thanks.

John

I personally don't see the changes Harley made as being significant. They
added a gear and juggled the ratios. They added helical gears to the tranny
when they should have made them for the cams. They put o-2 sensors on to
keep them emission compliant. The extra cubic inches can be had on a regular
TC88 with a big bore kit. Stage two big bore kits have been readily
available on ebay from dealers a couple of years now for around $600. I've
bought several. For the most part it seems to be business as usual for
Harley. I'll keep my '05.

Ladies and guys,

Thanks for the feedback so far. I talked with my dealer a bit this
morning. According to him, if I can remember all he threw at me:

1.) Correct - NO more carbs on any bikes.

2.) New engine is designed with new lower end but the same TC88
cylinders. This will allow a "quick" upgrade with a big bore kit - but
will take the bike immediately to 103 ci. for a much reduced price.

3.) Oxygen sensors all around. Slip on mufflers will still work but
newest computer may be more limited in tuning (I'm not sure I buy that
one). If full header pipes are swapped - more expense in finding kits
that include 0xygen sensors and proper ability to modify computer.
(That part I will believe.)

4.) Strong rumor is that Harley is bailing out of the exhaust market all
together due to new EPA issues. Possibly by beginning of 07 calendar
year, they will no longer be offereing any SE mufflers. (This is
still in the rumor stage but apparently was discussed at the dealer
meeting last week.)

For what it's worth.

Thanks again.

I just bought my first H-D the other day--an 06 Street Glide. They had
announced the new bikes a day or two before I picked mine up, but I am still
happy with the 06 and the 'old' TC88 motor. The new one has more torque and
HP (but not a huge amount more). There is a lot of internal change that
appears for the better, plus the new transmission should be much better. I
would assume the new top gear will increase fuel economy, which I am
guessing is something H-D wants to do because of the EPA thing--along with
EFI and catalyst exhaust.
We'll see what problems this setup has in the first year or so---this is the
main reason I am happy with the 06--I don't want to be anybody's guinea pig.
H-D probably feels they have to increase displacement, as all the japanese
cruisers are so much bigger now with far more torque and HP (not all, but
many of them). My last bike was a Yamaha Roadstar, and that bike has a
significantly bigger motor (much more torque by actually slightly less HP).
I guess if a big, beautiful motor is what you want, a Roadstar fills the
bill. Maybe some buyers look at that, look at the price difference in those
kind of clones and H-D and go for the Japanese bike. H-D seems to really
know the market, and they certainly know what they need to do to stay on top
as nobody seems to be able to catch up in sales, anyway.

The more I look at the new bikes the more I like my 1987 FLHTC. Want a
bigger engine? they start at $4995.00, want a six-speed? go to Baker,
I gag at 30K for a bike, maybe I am just a cheap MF'er but holy schitt!
It ain't a friggin house or motorhome! I would be paranoid about even
farting on a big buck bike to kill it's value!!!<grin>

My 02 Road King is all mine bought and paid for. I could upgrade to a 6
speed and even put in stroker wheels and rods and the with 95 inches get 103
inches a lot cheaper than buying a new 07. Plus. I'd have to start all over
again with all the chrome and whim whams and zoo zoos.I think I'll keep mine
a long time to come. Just Harley's marketing ploy to keep those wanting the
newest toys in the show room.

> in the rumor stage but apparently was discussed at the dealer meeting last
> week.)

> For what it's worth.

Yep, actually I purchased the 50th Anniversary sporty Wednesday and it will
be in August to add to my collection. The owner did confirmed they will be
no longer offering any slip-ons on the 07s. He said some dealers may still
offer the service but not for long it appears of the barking HDs are on
their way out. He said the 07 sportys will be even smoother the factory has
dome some better balancing of the flywheel with some crank shaft minor mods.
I rode one of the rubber mounted sportys a few weeks ago on a demo ride
event and it was night and day from what I have been riding all my life.

That's interesting.... whole new line of mufflers in the '07 P&A catalog as
well as some new ones in the '07 Screaming Eagle catalog........

Well TL obviously you got a pre-release catalog that was made before
that decision...

Hold onto that sucker, its worth a FORTUNE!

(That
> part I will believe.)

This is due to the limitation of ECM downloads available from the MoCo. They
can't possible design a matrix for every combo available........ you can bet
what they will offer will feature their own exhaust products.

As far as the O2 bungs..... Bub Reinhart already offers headers with bungs.
Everybody else will be playing catch-up. Tuning will be interesting... used
to be you'd have the ECM flashed and/or add a Power Commander. Right now
you're kinda limited to a SE Race Tuner.... which IMO, is a better
alternative anyway. For the '06 Dynas Dynojet merely added some caps to
disconnect the O2 sensors at the wiring harness taking 'em out of the loop.
Not exactly taking advantage of the closed-loop capabilites..... The
pre-made software combos for the Race Tuner will probably be as limited as
the ECM matrixes for a while.

I expect to pick up the new barge with a breather and SERT installed.
Eventually I'll have some bungs welded in my dual headers and have it dynoed
to dial it in.

I don't see it as a big deal. The engine is the same engine they have been
building for years, just a couple more cubes. The transmission is good, but
then again I also don't see at as a deal breaker.
The improved cam chain set up is the best part of it I see.
If the MOCO had come out with a totally new engine/transmission combo, maybe
water cooled then it would really catch my attention.
To me the '07's look like the same old glacier speed technology changes the
MOCO is famous for!
I am hanging on to my '05 until something "new" comes out!

I can't imagine being happy right now if I just bought an '06--knowing

Okay, my point is that those who blah blah blah about the various
changes and how they aren't worth the money, not enough and too little
too late, etc, etc, ad nauseum; never mention that they had intentions
of buying the bike to begin with. It's easy and very common for someone

I've never seen the need for even a five speed. Four speed is more than
enough. Even on a Sportster. I find it in fact a bit ridiculous. Six
speeds were first seen on high rpm and low torque dirtbikes or race
bikes, that made sense. Not on a Harley which seems to get more torque
every year.

><snip>
>> Would I want an '07 over my '05? Sure, but not bad enough to pay the
>> difference at this point! I have no complaints of my '05. I really
>> don't see the need for a six speed, desire for one maybe, need? No. I
>> am plenty happy with the HP of my TC88, I don't have any plans of
>> trying to bump the HP, hell, I still have the stock muffs on it! The
>> redesigned cam chain tensioners may be the only real plus, but then
>> give them some time. Time will tell if the redesign is an improvement
>> or not!
>
>I've never seen the need for even a five speed. Four speed is more than
>enough. Even on a Sportster. I find it in fact a bit ridiculous. Six
>speeds were first seen on high rpm and low torque dirtbikes or race
>bikes, that made sense. Not on a Harley which seems to get more torque
>every year.

I agree with that. My 4 speed FX ends up running at the same rpm my 02
FXDX runs around 75 or so and it's less work to get there. Of course I
don't have stock sized sprockets on the FX.

>>> I'm curious what you guys think forcing the new TC96 Engine combined
>>> with 6 speed tranny will do to the whole market. I know my dealer
>>> is gonna tell me it's the greatest thing to ever happen to mankind. I'm
>>> looking for opinions of riders, not sellers.
>>>
>>>
>> I don't see it as a big deal. The engine is the same engine they have
>> been building for years, just a couple more cubes. The transmission
>> is good, but then again I also don't see at as a deal breaker.
>> The improved cam chain set up is the best part of it I see.
>> If the MOCO had come out with a totally new engine/transmission
>> combo, maybe water cooled then it would really catch my attention.
>
> And I'm willing to bet more people would be bitching about that than any
> of the changes made this year.
>
>
>> To me the '07's look like the same old glacier speed technology
>> changes the MOCO is famous for!
>
> Regardless, it's the biggest change since the TC-88/TC-88b debuted.
>
>
>> I am hanging on to my '05 until something "new" comes out!
>
> Soooo, you ain't all that happy about that '05 right about now are ya'?
> <g>
>
> I can't imagine being happy right now if I just bought an '06--knowing
> that for $400 more I could have gotten closed-loop EFI, 6-speed tranny,
> 96" motor (with an easy jump to 103"), and redesigned cam-chain tensioners
> (among other things).

I must have missed the part in every one of their posts (in several
newsgroups) where the nay sayers stated or even alluded that they were
ever intending on buying one to begin with. Probably would have went
something like this:

"I was thinking, pondering, musing, considering, etc, etc, etc, about
buying one of the new '07 HD motorcycles, but decided not to for the
various reasons (already stated), blah, blah, blah."

Oh I get it now, you imagined that's what they were thinking. Thank you

Heh, I'm sure you have :) But I'm afraid that's not an option. Dutch
government and some european rules make it very difficult and very
expensive to import a motorcycle (or car) yourself.

You pay shipping cost, taxes, Custom, another stupid tax and have
to let it check if it's 'roadworthy' to get a license plate. Even if
it's almost new. Not to mention the weeks or months this is gonna take.

Some people did import a bike from the US and discovered that the older
the bike, the more you benefit from it. The bike has to be at least 9
years or older if you want to make a (very small) buck. To make a long
story short: It isn't worth the hassle and the cost will practically be
the same as you buy a bike that came through the 'normal'import
channels.

That's right! No taxes or whatsoever on that stuff. Hell, some of the
drugs are 'homegrown' here. No need for import! ;)

The government is out of his mind overhere. It's forbidden to grow or
import cannabis, hashish, marijuana, mushrooms, smart drugs and cannabis
seeds but it's legal to sell and buy it here in 'coffee shops'.

Speakin' of shitty service, we rent a couple of porta shitters for th'

No charge. Lots cheaper than replacin' th' fuckin' drain field like
we had to do in '02 after 50+ people used th' bathrooms inna house,
pretty much 24/7 for three+ days. That one cost me a couple grand.
Amanda and Red both had th' same problem at theirs... coincidence?
