#1: Hot damn... it finally happened!

Posted on 2006-07-22 08:13:12 by TL Mitchell

Everybody's been saying it'd happen sooner or later. And we waited... and
waited... and said 'maybe next year'. Well, the wait is over.

Sue bought some mail-order pipes for the new Sporty from Hale's H-D in
Mansfield, OH. They still had some of the discontinued SEIIs. She's well
equipped to go out and save lives now.... louder n stink!

Got a brochure from Hale's in the mail today announcing a "Summer Sale" til
7/31. Got some bikes listed with prices but doesn't elaborate how they're
equipped, black, pearl, two-tone, EFI or carborated. Still, some impressive
prices...

2006 Softail Deluxe for $15,999. Even if this bike is black, carburated, no
security system I still figger this is about $1200 *below* MSRP. Road King
Custom for $15995.... gotta be a grand under MSRP. All Vrods $2000 below
MSRP. Some of the other listings are less impressive but still below MSRP.

Now that the tables are turning I hope everyone remembers the dealers that
were doing right by the customers when it was a sellers market. The ones
that sold for MSRP then watched that bike being sold in the newspaper a
couple of days later at a coupla grand markup. And still they sold for MSRP.
And also remember the Stealers that gouged, wouldn't sell a bike unless it
was loaded up with thousands of dollars of crap and turned their nose up
when you pulled in with a 10 yr old bike for service. I hope those bastards
starve whilst standing around their Booteeks kickin' tires.

Yes indeed. It'll be many years before I can look at getting myself back on
a Road King (especially after just getting the Ural), but it's nice to now
the gouging is drawing to a close. Hell, perhaps that RK might come in the
form of a nice cheap used model.

Got a letter the other day from Daytona HD, where I never bought a bike.
Told me that as a current or former HD owner, I was entitled to a special
deal. Employee pricing on any bike. Today and next Saturday.

Imagine that.

Jeez, unfortunately today I'm nursing Ms. Mouse who had her gnee surgery
yesterday (she's doing fine) and next Saturday it's my day to brush the cats'
teeth. Can't put that off, they look forward to it all week long.

Not quite everywhere. I went by the local staler yesterday to look at
their "Blowout Tent Sale" and was not surprised to find an '05 Sportster
883 Custom for over $10k. They did have a bargain on the '93 FXR; called
it a Dyna and only wanted $13,500. I didn't bother to look at the used
touring bikes, didn't have any nitroglycerin tablets with me.

Overheard the sales guy quote an '07 Heritage Softail for $22k. I
started to ask if KY lube comes with it for that price but thought
better of it.

Also found out they don't work on Evo's any more, seems they don't have
any techs that are trained on anything older than TC88.

Sad thing is they had lots of folks there looking and most seemed
clueless to the gouging, guess there will always be a few to reinforce
the stealer behavior. Of course it'll be a while before I buy anything
but I really doubt I'll buy there when I do.

Still waiting

Maybe it's just me, but if I was looking for a new bike I'd have to
think really hard about a grand below MSRP for an '06. The new '07's
tranny and cam chain tensioners (and chain) alone would make me think
twice. The 96" motor and closed-loop EFI would prolly mean I'd want a
good 2-3 grand off MSRP on an '06.

OTOH, beta testing of the '07s has only just begun. <sfsf>

Seems like the ones still over MSRP ain't lookin' to change. Yet. IIRC,
Las Vegas is still selling above MSRP. I think their "blow out sale" is
gonna be _only_ $500-$1,000 above MSRP. Plus MSRP on the $2,000 worth of
crap they seem to preinstall on most every bike.

But they know they've got a problem: really hush-hush about the '07s,
and won't let any out the door till August 1. Not sure how that'll work
for 'em, considering they still have a shitload of '06s to move.

Yesterday, when speaking to the owner of the dealer I bought my bike
from he was rather convinced that many or most serious buyers have
already done their homework before walking in the door. The attitude at
the place seemed to reflect that. They didn't even bother trying to get
me to buy Stage 1 (didn't have it anyway), extended warranty, or the
other stuff they often try and push. 'Course it was two hours past
closing by the time I signed the final paperwork, so maybe that was a
factor.

Got the same letter my own self. Actually it was a different letter that

Probably either a trip to the barber or the dentist, haven't decided which.

Probably just stick with the Fattrain for a few more years.

I just bought a new 06 Softail a month ago ... didn't have a gouging problem
at all although that dealership is well known for being full of themselves
and they do try to sell 2-3K above MSRP for alot of their bikes.

Just told them I knew they were needing to move the 06's ... I wasn't and
didn't have the time to fart around or I would go down the road and see what
they had ... told them I would give them 13,800 for it ... and after about
10 minutes, they came back and said ok ...

Good idea. I used to have a pair of stainless steel mesh gloves that
somebody gave me from a chicken processing plant that were pretty good, but
every once in a while one of the cats would save up one claw until it was
extra-long like a coke nail and it would get through the mesh.

You don't happen to have anything useful for herding cats, do you? Still
haven't gotten that part of cat subservience nailed down.

>>> next Saturday it's my day to brush the cats'

>> When I was in they Army they had these nice Steel Stapled Leather
>> Glove used for stringing razor wire.

>> You may want a pair though I am not to sure how well you can hold a
>> tooth brush while wearing them.
>
> Good idea. I used to have a pair of stainless steel mesh gloves that
> somebody gave me from a chicken processing plant that were pretty
> good, but every once in a while one of the cats would save up one claw
> until it was extra-long like a coke nail and it would get through the
> mesh.

> You don't happen to have anything useful for herding cats, do you?
> Still haven't gotten that part of cat subservience nailed down.
