Question, since you have the Nforce4 chipset, was the onboard sound that bad
(or non existant?) all the boards I was looking to upgrade to have onboard
sound for the nvidia amd boards... confused, yea probably my part...

I never tried the onboard sound, since i have the audigy 2 ZS, have overall
been very pleased with it's performance, and I always heard onboard sound
eats more cpu cycles.

I had exactly the same problem with the sound in N2003 after installing on
my new system - Athlon X2 4800+, ASUS A8N-SLI, 2GB RAM, Leadtek Nvidia
7800GTX, Audigy 2ZS. The only way I could get it to run properly was by
disabling the Audigy, and using the onboard sound.
Maybe I should try the patches!! :)

Well, ymmv, but for the most part it has made mine better, although I have
since had a couple of lockups. Usually, if I pause the sim during a race,
upon unpausing, it crashes. It also has crashed upon exiting the game a
couple of times. Not sure if it is related to the Audigy or not...

The more I hear your symptoms, the more it sounds like a sound issue. You
might try uninstalling the Audigy in Device Manager and letting it
reinstall. You might even try the onboard sound just for grins and see if
there is any difference.

Ok, am back in town now.

I believe, I have a couple of issues here.
First, the overall stability of my system. I have been getting, on occasion,
some lockups. Usually, while perusing newsgroups or the web.
The frequency, seems to have been reduced, since installing the amd and Ms
dual core patches.
However, I have had a sneaky suspicion, part of that problem might be from
the power supply. My new mb, has a 24 pin connector, and my power supply,
only had 20 pin. ( not the additional 4 pin that goes beside the 20). While
the mb manual, states that a 20 will work properly if oriented correctly, I
will feel better having the full 24 pins in, so I ordered and have received
a new Antec 550 watt power supply, with the 20 + 4 pin connector. Have not
installed yet, but will sometime today.

Secondly, I believe like Ed mentions, I have a sound issue as well. I have
been wanting to upgrage to the Creative X-Fi, just needed an excuse, and I
guess this is a good enough one. Hopefully, it will help in that area.
Newegg had the Creative X-Fi Xtreme music for about 85 bucks, so I went
ahead and ordered one today, should be here next week.

I will let y'all know, if these help my issues.

Thanks to all for all the great feedback,

Don

That PS is definitely a concern. Especially if the wattage is low.

For 20 pin supplies, ASUS requires a 4-pin supplimental connector (like one
of the drive connectors) be attached to a special plug on the MB.

At least mine does.

I just got a new Antec TruePower 2.0 550w for $65. Problem solved.

I don't remember exactly what ps I have in this new system, I transferred it
from my older system.
I think it was around a 500w True Power, will confirm when I take it out.

I got the Antec 550W Neo HE, I liked the looks of the modular cables, so I
won't have any extras in there to tuck away that I do not use.
I just took it out of the box, and it indeed has the 20 + 4 pin
configuration. I'll get it installed here in a little bit, work keeps
getting in the way :).

>> Secondly, I believe like Ed mentions, I have a sound issue as well. I
>> have been wanting to upgrage to the Creative X-Fi, just needed an excuse,
>> and I guess this is a good enough one. Hopefully, it will help in that
>> area. Newegg had the Creative X-Fi Xtreme music for about 85 bucks, so I
>> went ahead and ordered one today, should be here next week.
>>
>> I will let y'all know, if these help my issues.
>>
>> Thanks to all for all the great feedback,

Yeah, that pesky work thing :)

>I don't remember exactly what ps I have in this new system, I transferred
>it from my older system.
>

>> That PS is definitely a concern. Especially if the wattage is low.
>>
>> For 20 pin supplies, ASUS requires a 4-pin supplimental connector (like
>> one of the drive connectors) be attached to a special plug on the MB.
>>
>> At least mine does.
>>
>> I just got a new Antec TruePower 2.0 550w for $65. Problem solved.

>>>>> > Well, ymmv, but for the most part it has made mine better, although
>>>>> > I
>>>> have
>>>>> > since had a couple of lockups. Usually, if I pause the sim during a
>>>> race,
>>>>> > upon unpausing, it crashes. It also has crashed upon exiting the
>>>>> > game a
>>>>> > couple of times. Not sure if it is related to the Audigy or not...

>>>>>
>>>>> The more I hear your symptoms, the more it sounds like a sound issue.
>>>>> You
>>>>> might try uninstalling the Audigy in Device Manager and letting it

>>>>> Ed
>>>>
>>>> Thanks Ed, I may do just that when I get back.
>>>> I have been looking for a reason to upgrade to the newer X-FI, and may
>>>> go
>>>> ahead and get one on order in the near future.
>>>>
>>>> Don
>>>>
>>>
>>> Ok, am back in town now.
>>>
>>> I believe, I have a couple of issues here.
>>> First, the overall stability of my system. I have been getting, on
>>> occasion, some lockups. Usually, while perusing newsgroups or the web.
>>> The frequency, seems to have been reduced, since installing the amd and
>>> Ms dual core patches.
>>> However, I have had a sneaky suspicion, part of that problem might be
>>> from the power supply. My new mb, has a 24 pin connector, and my power
>>> supply, only had 20 pin. ( not the additional 4 pin that goes beside the
>>> 20). While the mb manual, states that a 20 will work properly if
>>> oriented correctly, I will feel better having the full 24 pins in, so I
>>> ordered and have received a new Antec 550 watt power supply, with the 20
>>> + 4 pin connector. Have not installed yet, but will sometime today.
>>>
>>> Secondly, I believe like Ed mentions, I have a sound issue as well. I

Yeah, lemme tell ya!

Well, I was reading newsgroups, and blammo, complete system lockup.
I decided, now is as a good a time as any, so I put in the new Antec Neo HE
power supply.

Man, I love the modular design, very convenient. Just plug in the cables you
need, and leave out the ones you don't need, eliminating a lot of clutter.

Now, I officially have a full 24 pin connector in my motherboard.

Time will tell, if it will make any difference, if it does not lock up at
all this weekend, I am probably ok.

Of course, I do not think this issue is related to my N2003 woes, hopefully,
the sound card will help that. May try a quick race later this afternoon
though, just for giggles.
