OT: Ping DanKMTB - The new DVD Drive [message #795327] Thu, 21 February 2008 22:35

Got the new DVD drive ( LG GSA-H54L) installed a few minutes ago. So
far, so good. The computer recognised the drive and is reading CD and
DVD successfully and writing CD successfully (infact as I write this I
have the first CD I burned with the new drive playing in my stereo).
Haven't written a DVD yet, though I do have some data to archive that
I will do later.

As for the installation It was too simple. In reference to Scott's
comment, given the condition of my back sometimes, it was probablly
easier than changing my underwear.... :) You were right that I had
disconnected the power cable when I went under the hood - so to speak
- last night. and didn't notice it. I placed the jumper into the same
slot (the, "CS,"slot - is that the correct term?) exactly as in the
original drive was configured. Then connected the IDE cable slipped
the drive into the bay - I did have to install some screws that were
in the side of the old drive into the coresponding holes on the new
drive so the computer chassis could support the drive - connected the
power and got the system up and running.

Couple of questions, though: There was a CD that came with the drive
that had a number of things on it (Nero express, Power DVD power
producer, INCD and a few others but no indication of drivers). Is
there any need to run this disc? Also, if there is no disc in the
drive, the drive will show up as, "DVD-RAM Drive (E;)," in windows
explorer. Is this OK?

Lastly, many, many thanks for your assistance in getting this job
done!

Glad to hear it. I love being right ;)

Yes, CS stands for cable select. That means your IDE cable knows
which is primary and which is slave, which is why the 2 plugs on it
(excluding where it connects to the motherboard) are color-coded.

Good for you. The first one's always the hardest, you'll be good to
go in the future adding or changing any other peripherals.

Power DVD is a DVD playing and creating program. If you want to watch
DVDs I'd install it, but it's really up to you. I like it, others
like Windows Media Player with the proper encoders and such. Pop the
disk in and take a look, see if it looks like something you'd use.

Nero is a CD burning utility. Win XP should take care of burning for
you if you like it, or you could use Nero if you prefer. Your pc also
may have come with another burning utility such as Roxio, which will
also work fine. I'd skip it personally, but there's no reason not to
use it if you want to.

InCD is a Nero program. It allows you to burn CDs like you would move
files folder to folder, or to a floppy, with a simple drag and drop.
It's also helpful if you want to use the disks you burn on old
operating systems such as Win98. I'd skip it, but again if it seems
like something you'd like go nuts.

Just like the sound of an engine with a serious cam, it may not be
what you're used to, but it's more than right - it's peachy keen.

Not a problem. Congratulations on your new skill. Do that 2 or 3
times more and like Scott said, you're ready to work for Geek Squad.
