I am not fluent in Italian and I don't have any close relatives with
Italian ancestry, but I have actually done roads-related library
research at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze and I can see
all kinds of mistakes.
* I'm reasonably certain the name of the country doesn't take a
definite article. That is more a French thing--'La France', 'Le
Qu=E9bec' and so on. This would mean 'nell'Italia' is not correct.
* It is 'strade statali', not 'strade statale'.
* It would look strange to call a photo category 'strade statali
"dir"', even if Carl's Italian was correct (which it is not). "Dir"
in Italian is the abbreviation for 'diramazione', which I think means
something close to "duplication" but is generally used as a synonym
for 'bypass'. A more appropriate (and idiomatic) label would be
something like 'Diramazioni delle strade statali'--"bypasses of the
state highways."
* 'Viatologist' is a stupid made-up word, no matter what Indo-
European language it is parsed into. But, even so, 'viatologi' isn't
even the logical Italian transliteration for the plural. It would be
something more like 'viatologisti'.
* The sentence structure, being essentially Italian words in English
word order, is completely unidiomatic for Italian.
* First sentence has a number agreement error. "Fotografie dellE
stradA statalE" . . . see what I mean?

Actually, I think that's a singular noun preceded by a plural article,
and followed by an adjective for which I can't quite remember how to
determine number and gender -- at least the way Babelfish told krl to
write it. I think Jonathan got it right a few paragraphs up, where he
used "delle strade statali" -- or at least it sounds right to this
one-time, short-term, long-ago student of Italian. (I took ITAL 101 at
Michigan in the fall 1998 academic term.)

I have no formal training in any Romance language other than Latin, but
I have dabbled a little in French, Spanish, and Italian, and have also
been exposed to Portuguese and Catalan. Of all of those, it has seemed
to me that Italian has the most complicated gender/number relationships.
It's not just the masculine nouns which can take either 'il' or 'lo'
as the definite article--some common adjectival forms don't agree as to
gender in any obvious way. Cf. 'polizia stradale' ("highway patrol");
'polizia' is feminine, but Italians can also speak of a 'segnalo
stradale' (or, in the plural, 'segnali stradali') ("road sign"/"road
signs"), 'segnalo' being masculine. And then there are the nouns that
"harden" in the plural--'elenco' "list," 'elenchi' "lists," 'fungo'
"fungus," 'funghi' "fungi," and so on. Partitive articles are tricky too.
It would not at all surprise me to find out that Carl got the correct
translation from Babelfish, found that it did not fit with his
excessively simplistic understanding of Italian grammar, and "corrected"
the Babelfish output until it was flat-out wrong.
Anyway, I don't expect anyone to take my word on Italian
grammar--Italian Wikipedia does a reasonably good job of demonstrating
these usages in its article on 'strade statali':
