The taser is used in place of hand to hand combat. Both the
nightstick and physical contact result in more damage to the subject
and the officer thand a taser does.
Yes there have been deaths claimed for the taser. I have seen many
studies of it and none of them found the taser at fault, it was always
some other cause. 'Positional asphyxiation' seems to be most
prevalent, followed by 'excited delirium', followed by various medical
problems.
My view of them - yes, they are used too often where other 'non-
contact' methods may have worked. If it comes down to wackign someone
with a night stick - go to the taser instead.
Bean bags? I have seen the results of their use - no thanks. It
resolved the problem but also cost the county a bunch of money in
medical expenses patching up the damage (non lethal tho).
