Photos from Reykjavik, Iceland. [message #794675] Sun, 17 February 2008 20:33

Hi Viatologists,

Did you know that Iceland is culturally European, yet lies many kilometres
west of its roots? This special isolation has helped create a preserved
culture that has taken on its own language and adaptation skills. If you've
ever seen the Anthony Bourdain special on Iceland, you may know that this
isle has omission of sunlight in certain seasons. As a result, you may see
a lot more darkness in the sky than sun. Oh yeah, it's butt cold too.
Despite these shortcoming, these predicaments create an exciting experience
for young Icelanders, who pop out the alcohol and get bursts of energy from
ripened fruit and other interesting byproducts for a much extended nightlife
scene.

The Worldwide Highway Library, a component of Calrog.com, produly
reintroduces its road photos from Reykjavik, the literal and cultural
capital of the isle:

http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com
Photographs > Europe > Iceland

Within, you'll see a picture of the National Routes 1 & 49 duplex. Many
thanks to Dan Peri for catching these photos. His contributions to the
world's best library of road photos, videos and WHL-360s has afforded us w/
pictures from California to British Columbia to the Czech Republic to
Israel.

If you ever travel to Europe, consider a stopover in beautiful Reykjavik.
Icelandair is your hook-up, yo.

Cheers,

Carl Rogers

Ridiculous observation. Other European countries aren't isolated and they
have preserved their culture and have their own language and adaption
skills, too.

So does just about every other country in the world - European or not.

Idiot.

Did you know that Babelfish doesn't speak Icelandic, either?

I would say Iceland *seems* (saying so, since I've never been there)
more "Scandinavian" than just generally European. From what I
understand, they still name their children by patronymic, like the
Nords and Swedes did up until the 1880's or so. Europe is a continent
of many cultures and to cast Iceland into such a general group as
"European" is pretty silly and ignorant.

Iceland used to be a colony of Denmark until about the end of WWII. That
whole group, Denmark-Norway-Sweden-Finland-Iceland, were once governed by
bodies called "things." Now they are involuntarily dragged into some other
kind of "thing."

No more silly and ignorant than to call them Scandinavian without even
having been there.
Most European countries (indeed much of the world) used patronymics
until a few centuries ago, at least for those not of noble birth, that
is not something distinctly Scandinavian.

Iceland was really never a colony of Denmark, Iceland did have its own
laws and parliament to pass the laws and it received home rule from
Denmark in 1904 and became fully independent in 1918.
Iceland was a kingdom from 1918 until 1944 (the king of Denmark was
also the king of Iceland) but became a republic in 1944.

I agree, for I am silly and ignorant sometimes, myself. :) But
considering CalCan's approach to addressing most cultures, it's pretty
reasonable to assume (based on past posts) that he's a little more in
the "know-nothing-talk-much" group. There are a large variety of
cultures in Europe as there are here and elsewhere in the world.
"European" is too general a term, in my opinion, which is my point.
But alas, I only opine.

I know... more than 75% of my family is rooted in (mostly) Sweden
(near Borlange and Falun) and Norway, plus I have several Russian
friends, who've told me about their families and their histories. I
come from a long line of Anderssons, Pehrssons, and Johanssons. :)
