And the idiot spectators were standing in the road!!!

UPDATED: 10:27 am HST February 16, 2008
ACCOKEEK, Md. -- Police in Maryland said an uninvolved driver blinded by
exhaust smoke kicked up in an early-morning street race plowed into a
crowd of onlookers, killing eight and injuring six.
The deadly wreck happened about 3:40 a.m. Saturday on State Route 210 in
Accokeek, reported WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. Veteran officers called it
the "worst incident" they have ever seen.
Witnesses said two cars involved in an illegal street race had been
revving engines and kicking up smoke, filling the roadway with white
clouds. A group of onlookers then moved into the road to watch the race
when a white Ford Crown Victoria slammed into the crowd.
The driver told police that he was blinded by white smoke and could not
see the people before striking them. Officers said the driver was not
involved in the illegal race.
A tractor-trailer truck that came by shortly afterward may also have
struck someone on the roadside as it tried to avoid the crash scene,
about 20 miles south of Washington, said Prince George's County Police
Cpl. Clinton Copeland.
Residents along the stretch of high way about 20 miles south of
Washington, D.C., and 55 miles from Baltimore said street racing has long
been a problem. The stretch of State Route 210 is relatively straight,
with stoplights every 150 to 200 yards and little traffic at night.
Neighbors said they saw more than 200 cars parked in a lot near the crash
scene late Friday, and suspected a race was going to happen. They said
police have not responded to their complaints about street racing.

At least the dead weren't innocent victims. They were spectators at

They didn't know how bad the smoke was till they got into it. Most of
the fault is with the criminal street racers and the idiot spectators
in the road.

Why is the subject heading for this story, "KILLER was not in the
race..." All indications are the driver of this vehicle did nothing
wrong so why are you branding them as a "killer"?..When one enters a
foggy (In this case smokey) area it isn`t wise or common to just slam
your breaks on so then not stopping suddenly isn`t cause to say they
carelessly caused this to happen

Making a wild leap of assumption there aren't you? There is nothing
in the report except the car to say how old the driver was. I have
seen a lot of people driving Crown Vics that aren't 'doddering old
fools". Of course the driver _was_ stupid for charging into the
smoke.

!!?? Are you in the habit of driving into reduced visibility before
deciding to slow down? If so, maybe you should shift your gaze a few
yards down the road to see what conditions are coming up.

Uhhhhhh....it was DARK. Black smoke, in the dark. Even the
semi-truck driver who came upon the scene next, had poor
visibility.
But that's OK, Harry K. It's your turn to stand in the middle of
a dark highway tonight, and lecture drivers.

What happened to the concept of "overdriving your headlights' If they
couldn't see that wall of darkness approaching in time to slow
down...but I guess that would be beyond your comprehension.

Has it occurred to you that the driver who hit these people was not
overdriving his/her headlights, but when these idiots walked out onto
the road, it was too late for the driver to stop? All of the articles
I have read say that they stepped out onto the road after the drag
racers passed. If the driver was not so far back, he/she would not
have had time to stop. Do you expect someone driving an a 55 mph road
to drive more slowly just in case someone steps out in front of them?
This is not a side-street, where you have to watch for kids that might
run out. It is a road with a high speed limit, and anyone who walks
out into the middle of it so that they can gawk at drag racers is a
idiot. Whatever happened to the concept of holding people responsible
for bad things that happened to them as a result of their own stupid,
and illegal behaviour? I have compassion, but having compassion for
people who did something really stupid that injured or killed them
does not mean you overlook their role in the accident and put the
blame on someone who happened to be driving down that road at that
time.

Once you realize you are in or approaching reduced visibilty you
slow down yes..Coming along at 55 MPH on a darkened road and you
suddenly start hitting a foggy area you don`t just lock your brakes
up..I`m sure by the time this person saw the sudden fog/smoke in the
roadway and reached for the brakes to slow they were already on top of
the people..It`s not normal to expect anything to be stopped dead in
the middle of a highway so while one may slow somewhat to see beyond
the scope of your headlights you don`t creep along at 20 MPH either

No doubt...but factor in these.
Illegal street racers spewing smoke in the air at night.
Onlookers illegally gathering for the event, then going into a public
road.
Crown Vic driver and trucker (of GPSTroll Award contention) apparently
driving too fast for conditions...or lacking situational awareness.
None of the names should be changed, because in this incident *no one*
was innocent (any comment resemblance to the usual from Aunt Judy is
purely coincidental). We could take Aunt Judy's argument further by
recommending that all those on the scene who survived be
incarcerated...including the police department for failing to thwart
the incident.

Well it did occur to me to read the article posted here that makes it
plain that your assumptions are unwarranted.
"Fans had spilled onto the smoky, dark road to watch the cars drive
away when a white Ford Crwown vic unexpectedly......and smashed into
them"
So, no, they didn't wander our into the street unexpectedly.
Then I read the article in my local paper that shows tht the driver
was overdriving his headlights -
"About 50 pople people were watching the race, Gabons said, and she
saw the Crown Vic approach without its lights on...."
So if no lights =3D overdriving them then yes he/she was. The fact that
the driver was on the road with no lights indicates to me that there
was light of some kind, street lights?
I think Scott has it right - geezer driving.
The accident happened at 3:40 am which may already be lightening up
there. Not sure of the local conditions. My paper also said
"scattering bodies in the early morning darkness..." and "The
combination of the dark _morning_ and the smoke likely meant the
unsuspecting driver could not see the crowd..."
Now you can theorize, speculate, argue, all you want but the bottom
line is "you run into somehing - you screwed up". Of course there is
the 'sudden rock falling off cliff' and the like that cannot be
avoided but running into somethign already on the road? Running into
poor visibility without slowing first? That, added to the routine
tailgating, is the prime cause of the multi car pileups.

To me, a group of people walking into a street with high speed limit
is similar to a rock suddenly falling off a cliff. There are some
things that you just don't expect, and can't avoid. Also, it seems
that only that one woman claimed that the driver did not have his/her
lights on. If I recall correctly, she is the one who was out in the
middle of the street with her kid, and had to pull the kid out of the
street. Her dad had a broken leg and could not get off the street
quickly enough and was killed. Given that no one else has said that
the driver did not have his lights on, and that she was engaging in
really stupid behaviour, with her child present, I don't really trust
this woman's statement. Also, if she was watching the drag racers,
her back would have been to the car that hit them, so of course she
would not have seen the lights. I believe in "guilty until proven
innocent." We already know that this group of people was doing
something both illegal and stupid. There is so far no evidence that
the driver who hit them was guilty of anything more than being in the
wrong place at the wrong time. Really, who would, while driving on a
road at 55mph, consider it a possibility that you will come upon a
group of people standing in the middle of the road. I think it is way
too easy for some people to make judgements about this driver's
behaviour, and place little blame on these idiots who were in fact out
in the middle of the night, watching an illegal activity, and standing
in the middle of the road. Finally, you are a fine one to talk about
someone else speculating. You have assumed that the driver is totally
at fault here - no blame on these idiots at all. The bottom line that
you state, "you hit something, you screwed up" is not a hard and fast
rule. If you are out driving, and something darts out in front of
you, or a rock falls off a cliff, and you hit it, how did you screw
up? Are you supposed to always drive really slowly, just to avoid
that situation? So if the speed limit is 55, are you supposed to drive
15, just so that you can stop sooner? Aren't you then being a hazard
to everyone else on the road? Of course anyone involved in an
automobile accident is at fault to some degree just by having been in
that place at that time. But there are differing degrees of fault.
Right now, until there actually is evidence that the driver is guilty
of anything other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I
will continue to beleive the people who were hit bear the majority of
the blame for what happened to them.

You do realize that your argument re people walking into road being
the same as a rock suddently falling in the road absolves every driver
running into _anything_, at any time regardless of the visibility?
I did not claim that the people in the street were being stupid or
shouldn't be charged with somehting. Nice projection there.
The facts speak for themselves. The driver ran into somehting THAT
WAS ALREADY on the street. That driver should be charged with
something.
If you really believe and drive the way you are coming off, I hope you
aren't drving in my area.

THis is a society of ticky-tacky laws selectively enforced. The presumed
geezer driving a crown vic is a good citizen and those who turn out to
watch street racing are evil, dangerous, no good people. Simple as that.
All blame lies with the street racers. That's how this society functions.

No, it does not absolve anyone of ever running into anything. I am
taking into account many things, like that it was dark out, the speed
limit was 55, and these people wandered into the street. We still do
not know whether they had been standing there for a while, or they
just walked out there as the car was approaching. Again, until there
is evidence regarding the driver doing something wrong, I'll assume he
or she did not. The people who were hit were obviously doing
something wrong. If the driver is determined to be responsible, I
will be the first one to say he deserves whatever punishment he gets.
Until that happens, this just seems to me like a bunch of idiots who
wandered into traffic.
If I drive the way I am coming off? hahaha, talk about
projection...you think you know how I drive based on what I write?
For the record, I have had my driver's license for 31 years, and have
never been in an auto accident, and have never gotten a ticket. I
also ride a motorcycle, and have taken the motorcycle safety class,
and also have taught the class for several years. The focus is on
safe and defensive driving. However, no matter how safely someone
drives, there are situations that you can not possibly foresee. I
consider a group of people walking out into a road with a 55mph speed
limit, in the middle of the night, one of those situations. If that
happened to you, would you be able to stop? Are you confident that
you would be able to stop? Do you know the stopping distance of your
car at every speed? How can you be so sure? Have you ever been in
an accident? If so, why couldn't you avoid it? Let's say that a car
runs a red light and you t-bone it - wouldn't that be your fault for
not being prepared for that to happen? Remember your rule - if you
hit something, you did something wrong....so how do you avoid that
situation when someone runs a light? Or maybe they turn left in front
of you? Really the only way to avoid any possible mishap is to drive
around at 5mph. Anyone who drives like that is just as big a hazard
as any speeder is.

In Claybrookian america (sic), that is exactly what is expected.

Agreed. The estates of the dead idiots, the other gawkers who ran out
into the road and the racers themselves should be required to pay for
1) any damage to the roadway and/or infrastructure that arose from
their criminal acts
2) replace the car of the gentleman who had the misfortune to be in
the wrong place at the wrong time
3) repair any damage to the articulated that was also invoilved
4) any and all physical and/or mental injuries that the gentleman
and/or the trucker incur.

The guy and the truck were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I believe that is what I just wrote. However the blame is being placed on
the 'street racing' drivers and the crowd 100%. The cops actually want to
find the drivers doing the burn outs. When do they even bother looking Mr.
Magoo that leaves collisions in his wake where no physical contact is
made with his vehicle?? slightly more than never I figure.
And then there are cases where someone drives up on the sidewalk kills a
ped and gets at worst a traffic ticket with a smaller fine than the
standard speeding ticket.

You know as well as I do, that if it wasn't a presumed geezer in a crown
vic but some kid in a riced out car the driver would be held at fault,
100% however. That's how the system works and the point I'm making.
How about the people who mash the accelerator instead of the brake and
drive into buildings? They are rarely charged or even get a trivial
ticket. Instead of an 80 year old in a crown vic, take
a 20 year old in WRX who slides off an exit ramp and mashes up his car
but causes no other harm. He's going to get every ticket a cop can dream
up even though he harmed no one but himself.

Unless you're a member of a protected group or the person(s) you hit are
a member of a 'bad' group. In which case it's perfectly fine to drive the
speed limit no matter what.
Some years ago I was driving on residential street where some asshats had
double parked and left the double parked car with the high beams on. So I
can't see anything past the glare of these high beams. I slow to a crawl.
As the glare of the high beams is behind me, there are some of the
asshats standing in the remaining road available for traffic. I stop or
come close to it. they get out of the way If I continued at the 20mph
speed limit they would have been hit, no question about it. I wouldn't
have been able to stop a bicycle from 20mph in the space from where I got
past the glare to where they were standing. Under the system as it is
normally done, I would have been at fault.
How about turning this on it's head a bit and make it someone who should
be in the road.
Let's replace the crowd gathered to watch a burn out, with say stopped
traffic, put a motorcyclist last in the queue and have some sort haze,
smoke, whatever obscuring the view. A driver plows into the motorcyclist
because he just drove on normally even though his view was obscured. Who's
fault is it?
While the people shouldn't have been standing in the road, that doesn't
excuse driving blindly into a cloud at the speed limit. The smoke didn't
occur suddenly and was likely visible for some distance before hand.

Interesting projection. I'd be curious to learn how old you are, with
how quick you are to label people "geezers" so quickly. It reminds me
of the homophobe trying so hard not to acknowledge his own homosexual
thoughts. Are you afraid you might be a geezer, Scott? Is that what
the vette's about, mid life crisis?
My best friend drove a crown vic for a while, from 23-25 years old.
This is someone who has years and years of racing experience. He's
now 27, and likely about to give his wife the explorer and buy another
high performance crown vic, this one wearing mercury marauder badges.
If you and he were to go all out on a very driver-centric course, you
in your C6 & him in his police package crown vic, I'd have a hard time
deciding who to bet on. I'd probably bet on him, since I know his
background regarding racing and knowledge and skill will beat out the
better vehicle more often than not.

Early 40's, and you've called geezer at people in their fifties. I'd
say you might be a little insecure there, especially reading your
posts. By the way, early 40's are not only close to mid-life, it's
actually past mid-life, with average life span being fewer than 80 as
it is. When people in their teens or 20's refer to that old guy
having the mid-life crisis, you're exactly who we're talking about.

Early 40's, and you've called geezer at people in their fifties if not
younger. I'd
say you might be a little insecure there, especially reading your
posts. By the way, early 40's are not only close to mid-life, it's
actually past mid-life, with average life span being fewer than 80
years as
it is. When people in their teens or 20's refer to that old guy
having the mid-life crisis, you're exactly who we're talking about.
The vette & the MFFY cam are all part of it.

Easily usenet POTD!! lmao. The irony - it's killing me! Please
meet
Mr. Kettle...

I'll decline. Since you have your reader set never to archive your
posts, it'd be a PITA to find an example. What's the official Scott
geezer cutoff? 60? 62? It's all close enough.

I'm 25, no daily meds needed. I'm entertained by the concern all the
same.

Post Of The Day. Reading "Mr. Armchair Analyst" come from your screen
name, especially in a thread containing some of your wild assumptions,
actually made me laugh out loud. That doesn't happen too often just
from reading usenet.

I deleted the first to repost with a typo fixed. Us younger types are
google-centric, so if it messes up some of you old folks with old
school newsreaders so be it. :)
