ATV accidents killed more than 100 kids in '06
Most fatalities tied to vehicles going too fast, riders not wearing helmets

updated 1:28 p.m. MT, Thurs., Feb. 14, 2008

WASHINGTON - At least 555 people — including more than 100 children — died
in all-terrain vehicle accidents in 2006. Government safety officials
expect the number to go much higher as they receive information from
coroners and hospitals nationwide.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that an additional 146,600
people were treated in emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries — more than
a quarter of them children.

Consumer groups and parents who have lost children in crashes have
complained for years about the safety of the popular off-road vehicles.

The industry contends it’s not the ATV but the driver that’s the problem.

Parents shouldn't let their kids drive these crazy things.

Would you rather have another hundred potential speeders and drunk
drivers on the road in the next 5 to 10 years? You of all people should
be glad those kids are dead.

I agree. Since I'm in the market for a high performance 3-wheeler (or
at least rolling chassis) it would be great if the market suddenly
flooded.

Great. First, gun-grabbers are trying to take away our guns and now
ATV-grabbers are trying to take away our four-wheelers.

Don't you know that my 5-year-old has a constitutional right to ride
an 75HP, high-performance ATV any damn place she wants to?

It's a Darwin Award in the making.

Yep. And S&DDAm (or SFB as I prefer to use) falls squarely into both
categories. The sooner that someone puts a bullet through its head and
gives it a last ride into a swamp on an ATV to become vulture food,
the better.

Yes, but never deliberately. In fact i got a speeding ticket about 5

stretch could be 25, i thought."

I noticed this same phenomenon when I was a kid.

The phenomenon is that whatever a kid enjoys doing, there are a lot of adults
standing around saying they shouldn't be allowed to do it.

Hell, kids HAVE lots of stuff to do, such as video games, that don't involve
any risk at all. There are adults that don't want 'em doing those, either.

And in fact, there is risk in everything. The video games contribute to being
physically unfit and overweight, which is a big risk for anybody.
