Drunk driver fined for car crash that killed friend

A judge has fined a Nova Scotia man $700 for driving drunk last spring in
an incident that killed his best friend.

Jonathan Savoy, 29, of Blockhouse, initially faced four charges, which
included impaired driving causing the death of his friend, David
MacDonald, in the spring of 2007.

But that charge was dropped after Savoy pleaded guilty to impaired
driving, taking a car without permission and driving while suspended.

Savoy was fined $700 for the impaired-driving conviction in provincial
court in Bridgewater Wednesday.

The judge also fined him $300 for taking his wife's vehicle without her
permission and $500 for driving while suspended.

Susan MacAskill of Mothers Against Drunk Driving said she was appalled
with the judge's decision.

"Somebody's dead and nobody seems to be held responsible," she told the
Chronicle Herald newspaper.

During sentencing, court was told that Savoy had a few drinks with
MacDonald before driving.

Savoy later crashed the car, and his friend was killed.

Another one for the Criminal Coddler Hall of Fame. He shoulda been locked
up forever.

This really is outrageous, assuming all the essential information has been
given in this article.

My brother and sister-in-law have an agreement. Neither one drinks very
much, but they always agree in advance if either of them plans to order
drinks with a meal. Only one will drink the the one who does not drink will
be the driver on the way home (or wherever they are going after the meal).
Likewise, if they visit friends who offer drinks, only one will drink and
the other will be the driver.

Yes, but never deliberately. In fact i got a speeding ticket about 5

stretch could be 25, i thought."

You seem to think that EVERYONE is a criminal coddler. Bet you can't
say that about the James Chester DUI hit and run case now can you? If
you are going to spout off about these things, you better know about
every case. And this one does not fit into your normal "coddlers" now
does it?
