A blinding snow squall caused a 68-vehicle pileup on an interstate highway
in northeastern Pennsylvania, killing at least one motorist and injuring
several dozen, authorities said.
The snow led to the mid-afternoon pileup on Interstate 81. Northbound lanes
were shut down and motorists detoured.
A woman died when her car became wedged underneath a tractor-trailer, said
Lt. Jason Zoshak of Hazleton Township Fire and Rescue. About 35 people were
injured. And at least 24 people whose cars were not drivable were placed in
shelters.
"They had a heavy snow squall going through the area, zero visibility, high
winds," he said. "There were vehicles everywhere."
Eighteen people were taken to Hazleton General Hospital, where most were
being treated for minor injuries. Nursing supervisor Monica Link said she
does not know whether any will be admitted.

That's what happens when you set artificially low speed limits. The
signs are interpreted
as recommended speeds, not limits, since they aren't. So those folks
lose their ability
to judge the proper speed for conditions. If limits were set
properly, there would be less
of these types of accidents.

There's no safe speed in those conditions, not even zero. If you're slower
than someone else, you're going to get hit from behind. If faster, you're
going to hit someone else. And in those conditions, you're slower and faster
than others both at the same time.

I dont' know about that. When I've driven in heavy snowfall or fog, I
try to drive a safe speed for the conditions - but I have to drive
faster than would otherwise because idots are going way too fast for
thsoe conditions.
At a safe speed, that is one where I could sop myself before hitting a
car with no lights stopped in the road, there are people going the
speed limit or over who would not be able to see me early enough to
slow down.
All of these 100 car plus pile ups are the result of people driving
too fast for condtions. The sad part is some people in the pile-up
were probably driving safely.

Well...by definition I guess so but the real cause is not allowing
enough space ahead of oneself. Just eyeball the sheep clusters on any
highway in good condition and not 10% of them have enough space ahead
of them. One can increase the safety zone by maintaining speed but
dropping back (yes, lift your foot for a few seconds), or slowing down
while maintaining the same space.
Unfortunately in very poor visibility the odds of getting rear ended
by driving a speed reasonable for the conditions approaches 100%.
Then if you _do_ have to slow drastically the moron parked 10 ft off
your bumber _will_ rear end you. The only true solution to the
conditions cited is "Get the hell off the highway and park" - out in
the median, in the ditch, anyplace except on any portion the paved
road. BTDT in a fog near Buffalo NY 1972.

Alas, these sorts of wrecks destroy the
cautious and diligent along with the
idiots.
You see it all of the time, snowstorms, blinding
rain, duststorms ... the instant people get the
impression the cops can't see them or will be
otherwise involved - they put the pedal to the
metal. People don't LIKE speed laws, so they
take advantage of any perceived opportunity to
ignore them.
Yet they won't use the vote to eliminate the
speed laws entirely ... because they DO want
all the OTHER drivers constrained because that
further enhances THEIR freedom when they cut loose.
Nobody ever claimed that human brains were wired-up
by trained, qualified technicians :-)
IMHO, well, there's an old phrase that goes something
like "Those who will not control themselves will BE
controlled". Won't be long before the Fed requires
GPS-based tattletale devices in every car. You'll
just get a letter in the mail - demanding $10,000
and your licence.
