WHL-360 access gets relaxed [message #793388] Thu, 07 February 2008 04:41
Carl Rogers
Hi Viatologists,

The Worldwide Highway Library introduced Hotlink Protection for its
videos and "WHL-360s" not so long ago. WHL-360s are basically full-
circle photographs using Quicktime compression. Our Hotlink
Protection mechanism is quintessentially academic; it allows general
users like yourself to view WHL media while mitigating unauthorised
access. As a result of our recent deployment, I came across an
interaction between the mechanism, Firefox and the Quicktime plugin.
The symptom involves a non-functional Quicktime window (signified by a
question-mark icon). There have been ~950 failed, legitimate attempts
to reach WHL-360s since this beginning of the month. Error code:
"HTTP 302".

(This whole situation rang a figurative bell over here today! Users
of Internet Explorer have not been affected by the issue.)

I've decided to relax Hotlink Protection against the Quicktime (MOV)
filetype. This filetype represented 10% of total bandwidth for the
month of January, and though we project linear growth for this
filetype this year, I don't see its growth as a bandwidth danger for
the forseeable future. We do apologise if you've been unable to view
WHL-360s from your Firefox browser recently. Today, the problem is
solved. That said, here is your second chance to see the California
68 presentation made not too long ago:

http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-68v.html

Hotlink Protection does and remains enabled for our selection of WMV
videos. If you own your own website and wish to link to these media,
feel free to contact me regarding licensing information.

Thank you,

Carl Rogers

I've decided not to care. Your QuickTime sucks, your site sucks, your
half-assed inability to keep away potential users suck, your prose sucks,
your apartment sucks, and you suck too.

You guys are fighting below your weight class, and it reflects poorly
on you.

Why all the hostility? Yeah, I think Carl's obsession with highways
is a little weird too, but it's harmless enough. If you aren't
interested in his posts or the videos he posts links to, when not
just -- dare I say it? -- ignore them and get on with your lives?
Why the mob mentality and the urge to dogpile on the guy?

Or to put it another way: Grow the fuck up, already.

Why not? Usenet performance art has been around as long as Usenet. Oh be
safe your virgin newsreader.

> Or to put it another way: Grow the fuck up, already.

If you want to "grow the fuck up," killfile Carl, filter anything with "WHL"
in the subject lines, and stop acting like you're the only grown-up in the
whole school. Try minding your own fucking business -- Usenet isn't your
playground and you're not my mom, you arrogant ass-sniffer.

It isn't performance art. It's simple elementary-school-level
playground mob behavior, and you reveal yourself as a nosepicking
intellectual pre-pube by engaging in it.

Why shouldn't I act that way? By all indications, I clearly *am*
the only grown-up in the whole school. And somebody obviously
needs to step forward to keep you dumbasses in line. Pleased
t'meetchew, won't you guess my name?

My not using a killfile isn't the problem. Your idiocy is the
problem. If you took your attitude to any part of the civilized
world, the locals would entertain themselves by kicking your
pimply ass around the town square for three-quarters of an hour.

Oh, now *there's* an adult response. And such an awesome command
of the language. Bill Buckley and George F. Will have *nothing*
on the likes of you, by cracky.

Your mother must be very proud. Or no doubt would be, if she
weren't preoccupied with holding her ankles up behind her ears
for the benefit of the UPS man.

If it's posted in a public forum, that makes it my business, you
wheezing spud. And if you aren't strong enough to handle that,
and the criticism that comes with it, then get your intellectual
masturbation off of here and take it to email.

If that's too stressful for you to handle, you can always put a
gun in your mouth and paint the wall with what passes for your
brains.

Gosh, aren't you just the cleverest. As it's a public forum, what gives you
the right to tell anyone to stop doing anything? If you're aggrandizing
yourself by pretending to be the only adult in the room, how is that
anything other than "intellectual masturbation?"

> If that's too stressful for you to handle, you can always put a

Wow. You just bowl me over with your witticisms. Please explain why you
shouldn't be invited to do the same since Usenet is just too stressful for
your matured mind to deal with.

You want to talk about fighting below my weight class? You're a
pretentious, stupid, blowsy, hypocritical wanna-be johnny-come-lately who
thinks "wheezing spud" is clever and suggesting that I give oral
gratification to a firearm is somehow hurtful. You want to put yourself
over as mature? Killfile me and move on. You want to prove that you're not
nearly as smart as you think you are? Keep trying to win a flamewar with
me. I get more intelligent things than you in my junk mail. I've seen
wittier statements than yours on traffic signs. The kid on the short bus
that the other kids pick on is more clued up to how life works than you are,
and what's more, he at least knows enough to quiet down when someone slaps
him. Use your faux indignation for something infinitely more productive;
for example, why not save the Earth -- go down to the local biker bar and
suggest the Hell's Angels trade their bikes for Priuses. Now, see how much
smarter my suicide suggestion was than yours? That's what happens when you
take on someone who isn't in your weight class. Now, sit down, shut up,
exercise your killfile, and be wary of approaching Carl's signal-to-noise
ratio, lest you attract any more of my attention.

PS Setting follow-ups to misc.test is lame. And you bungled the Kinison
quote in your .sig. Try again, n00b.

Absolutely. And it's to you credit that you recognize that.

That's one thing you have going for you, even if you haven't
much more cerebral horsepower than is required to take care of
basic biological housekeeping functions. Does your vision gray
out for a moment when you fart? Do you forget your name when
the doorbell rings?

Hey! Take your hand out of your pants and pay attention. I'm
talking to *you,* numbnuts.

What gives me the right to do it is the fact that I'm a member of
this 'ere virtual community, and the direction in which it goes
is the resultant of all the vectors contributed by all the par-
ticipants who feel like speaking up.

What that means, in language a beetle-brow such as yourself might
have an easier time understanding, is that my say counts for just
as much as anybody else's. Even yours. And if you don't like that,
then feel free to go forth and suck horsebutt. (Maybe I'll start
calling you "Kissably Fresh.")

Um, because it's true. I find that always counts for a lot, don't

Oh, dear me. I certainly wouldn't want to do that. What a scary man.
What a scary, scary man.

*chuckle* You puling little jackoff...

You clearly have delusions of adequacy. Maybe next year, in fourth
grade, you'll learn about the use of paragraphs. If you don't get
shitcanned right back into third grade again, that is. Which, it's
plain to see, is a real possibility.

So you think that calling someone "stupid" is hurtful? And speaking
of being a "blowhard," you think that trying to scare them off with
lots 'n' lots of angry text (why, you even mentioned the Hell's Angels!)
is a substitute for a cogent (look it up) riposte? Don't waste my time,
punk. If I decide I want any comeback from you, I'll scrape the back of
your friggin' throat.

> PS Setting follow-ups to misc.test is lame.

Why would that be? It got you to waste a few keystrokes, didn't it?
I'd say I definitely came out ahead in that one. If you had half a
brain, you wouldn't even have mentioned it. But you stepped on your
crank. With track shoes. Damn, that's got to hurt.

> And you bungled the Kinison quote in your .sig. Try again, n00b.

Did m.t.r. even exist in 1989? I know Usenet has been around since
1980, but when was it established? I started reading m.t.r. around
1997.

I hereby present you, "Ron's Inspector's Inspector," with the Yost Ice
Arena Superfan Chanting Grand Award. ;-)

That's one of the most Section 16-like things I've heard since my days
as one of the cowbellers in that section. Hell, I came this close to
getting thrown out of Yost once for a very similar chant about Miami
(Oh.) University.

Here's a few of the classics for you:

(phone rings in the press box)
Hey Calrog, it's your mom. She says, "YOU SUCK!"

(randomly)
Hey Calrog, you're not a goalie, you're a sieve.
You're not a sieve, you're a funnel.
You're not a funnel, you're a vacuum.
You're not a vacuum, you're a black hole.
You're not a black hole,
YOU JUST SUCK! YOU JUST SUCK! YOU JUST SUCK! YOU JUST SUCK!

(and had krl been known in the Michigan hockey fan community back around
2000, the penalty box chant for an opposing player going off)
Ohhhhh ... C-YA! Chump! Dick! Wuss! Douche bag! Asshole! Prick! Cheater!
Bitch! Sprecher! Oh, forget about it. (1,2) Ellerbe! Calrog! Oh!

To leave the past for a moment, I'm definitely looking forward to this
weekend's Michigan hockey series: the #1 vs. #2 clash with Miami down in
Oxford, OH. The RedHawks and Wolverines have controlled the top two
places in the national rankings for most of the year; Miami has spent
more time at #1, including the last week and a half.

- Larry, Section 16 denizen when at Yost, occasional traveler to far-off
away games, and cowbeller extraordinaire from 1998-2001

Oh, really? Tell me, whatever happened to:

>> Now, sit down, shut up, exercise your killfile, and be wary
>> of approaching Carl's signal-to-noise ratio, lest you attract
>> any more of my attention.

I thought that was pretty bold stuff, coming as it did from
someome who isn't even brave enough to post under his real
name. <snicker>

You know what I think? I think you're some pimply, sixteen-
year-old dateless wonder using his mommy's computer, and that
when you made the mistake of taking me on, you soon realized
that your big, bad alligator mouth had written a check that
your little puppydog ass couldn't cash. Now you're trying to
salvage what little remains of your dignity while running for
the door.

You're a wanker who got more than he bargained for, in other
words. It's clear that you're a bully, and you felt like a
big man beating up on mild-mannered Carl Rogers because he
just took it and wouldn't engage you in a flamewar. Like all
bullies, though, you can dish it out but you can't take it.
Now that someone who's made of sterner stuff has come along and
booted your virtual ass up between your shoulderblades, you're
trying to break things off. But I wasn't finished with you just
yet, so here I am once again.

By the way, since you mention killfiles, why do I have to use a
killfile to filter out the posts of you and your butt-buddies
who dogpile on Carl, but you don't have to use a killfile to
keep from seeing my responses to you? Could you explain that
to me, you pole-smoking little hypocrite?

On second thought, don't bother. Just shut the fuck up and get
back in your hole.

This thread is crossposted among four newsgroups. My use of the
word "both" would've been a tip-off to anyone with half a brain
that I was referring to the two that *were* around in 1989. That
criterion clearly leaves you out of the running, though, doesn't
it, Einstein?

I'm reading this thread in ca.driving, most of the content of which
is crossposted to rec.autos.driving. I'm so accustomed to seeing
those two newsgroups in the Followup-To: line that by the time I
reached the end of my response, I'd forgotten that the thread was
also crossposted to misc.transport.road and ba.transportation.

The point is that since I've been on the Net since 1989, I'm hardly
a "n00b" as your butt-buddy Ron's Inspector's Inspector claimed.
That little nitwit probably didn't even have hair on his balls
when I began posting.

If a gratuitous insult were all I had to offer, you'd have a point.
But as you can plainly see, I had a lot more to say than that. The
"Meatlick" thing was akin to a Maraschino cherry atop a sundae of
more substantial fare. Think of it as an ornamental garnish.

Besides, Kesti's obviously one of those r.a.d. nitwits in the mold of
gpstard and Ron's Inspector's Inspector who flames people just to
flame people, as the personal nature of his attack demonstrated.
He didn't deserve a response that was any more highbrow than what
I gave him.

Dogpiling on Carl, on the other hand, is inherently juvenile. Come
on, Scott; all of this should've been readily apparent to someone
as intelligent as you are. And I suspect it was. I think you're
arguing just to argue. You've *never* done that before... <cough>

Since when does "both" apply to a set of four? That was a tip-off, alright;
a tip-off to the fact that you're not only full of shit, but you're unable
to fully express just how full of shit you are.

Complaints? I wouldn't expect someone who was so badly outclassed

iority. It simply isn't human nature, even when someone is smart
enough to grasp his lowly place in the existential pecking order.

Why am I supposedly full of shit? That's rather vague, not to mention
childish. Could you be more specific? What precisely have I said that
you disagree with, and why do you disagree with it?

Mediocrity? I'm obviously good enough to keep the likes of you
occupied, it would appear.

Speaking of hypocrisy, why is it that I should have to use a killfile
to keep from seeing your posts, but you shouldn't have to use one to

it seems to me.

You mean run from it. I read a lot of dull, rehashed insults. Just because
you can bang on your keyboard and make dirty words on your monitor doesn't
mean anything you say is valid or even lucid. I'd killfile you, but it's

Oh, bullshit. I criticized them for something they were doing,
and they responded with personal insults. So I'm not allowed
to respond in kind? Once one party lowers the exchange to that
level, the gloves come off on my side, too. That's only fair.

I do have half a brain, incidentally. Front half - it's quite a deal,
really, since I get some left half and some right half IN YO MIX. I
did check up on the proper usage use of the word "both" before posting
my reply. Not all uses are limited to two items. <he...who loveth well

sombunall of the groups, it's on your for not specifying what they
were.

And now the explanation comes out, after the fact. Freely admitting
*your own error.* I'm not going to own your mistakes.

All questions of Einsteinium and who does what with whose butts aside,
your posts only serve to spew bile & hate around, and contribute
nothing worthwhile to the discussions of MTR. (The other groups, I
cannot speak for, as I do not frequent them.) At the very least, you
could join in on flaming Krl if you wanted to participate. It doesn't
matter how long you've been posting to any group; seniority does not
establish credibility, as is clearly indicated by the nature of your
posts in this thread. It just means you've had a lot more time to be a
flaming antagonistic troll.
I think having a wank might be a good suggestion too; it could be a
good release for a lot of the pent-up aggro and sexual frustration
bubbling to the surface in a number of your posts. It can help people
to be less uptight.
But if you're just interested in flaming and fighting words, that's
cool too. It's a public forum in a (more or less) free world.

puppet of Krl Rgrz, but is too lazy to do the research himself.)
