I don't understand what was happening this week, but it was really bad
on the roads. It started at a traffic signal, where I was behind a
Honda in the left-turn lane. The light turned green and I followed the
Honda into the turn. That's when I noticed an SUV approaching from the
right and saw that it was very-likely not going to stop for its red
light. The Honda driver didn't seem to notice this, and continued
turning after I stopped. Drivers at this wide intersection started
honking in an attempt to wake up the oblivious drivers, and the Honda
driver finally noticed the illegal SUV and stopped. The SUV driver
continued at the same speed, running the red light and barely-missing
the Honda. If the Honda driver hadn't stopped, the SUV driver would
have crashed into it. If the SUV driver didn't want to stop, why didn't
it speed up so as to miss hitting the Honda?
Here's a list of other incidents this week:
I was in a left-turn lane when I heard screeching tyres and saw a small
car swerve to the left and skid to a stop for a traffic signal that had
just turned red. It appeared that a minivan driver in the right lane,
about 75 m before the intersection, had stopped suddenly in front of the
small car. That driver panicked and accelerated while swerving to the
left. After the missed collision, the minivan driver started drifting
very slowly toward the intersection and stopped again about 10 m from
the stop line. It appeared to have been a deliberate attempt to cause a
collision.
I saw a driver pull out from my left and turn onto the street in front
of me. He was almost hit by a small Honda in the opposing lane, but
don't blame the turning driver. The Honda driver was driving on a dark
street with no lights on!
I was in the centre lane behind another car and passing a minivan that
was in the empty right lane. As the car in front of me was next to the
minivan, the minivan driver started tapping its brakes and seemed to be
trying to move into the centre lane. As I started passing the minivan,
the minivan driver tried to merge into the side of my car, probably
expecting that I was going to stop or swerve for it. There was no
traffic behind me and no traffic in the lane in front of the minivan.
This also appeared to have been a deliberate attempt to cause a collision.
I was stopped at a yield sign and was waiting for a line of traffic to
pass. A driver behind me started honking, seeming to suggest that I
should drive into the tightly-spaced traffic and risk a collision while
forcing my way into the lane, instead of waiting 30 seconds for the
traffic to pass.
At another intersection, the traffic on the intersecting street had
stopped and the signal for the left-turn lane was green. As the first
driver in line started to turn, a driver that was first in line on the
right ran the red light and almost hit the driver in front of me. The
red-light-runner then started driving very slowly and holding up the
traffic.
And at another intersection, I had a Ford driver in front of me that
didn't seem to understand the rules of right-of-way at a traffic signal.
The light was green and the few cars in front of the Ford driver had
gone through the intersection. The Ford driver stopped suddenly in the
intersection, and then started waving to the drivers on the intersecting
street that they should go in front and against their stop. I passed on
the left, and the Ford driver sped up as I cut in front.
I was in the right lane today and going about 100, following a Chrysler
SUV that I really wanted to pass but didn't feel like speeding up to 140
to use the passing lane. I temporarily forgot that drivers of oversized
SUVs that I can't see around are more likely to do something stupid. As
I approached a merge point, another SUV driver started driving onto the
acceleration lane. That's when the Chrysler SUV driver slammed on the
brakes and stopped! The SUV driver on the acceleration lane then drove
in front of the other SUV at a speed of about 40. I was almost hit by
several drivers behind me, who did not expect to see traffic stopped in
the lane. I found an opening in the centre lane and accelerated to
pass, moving quickly back to the right to yield to the approaching
traffic. The merge-impaired SUV driver then honked and flashed its
headlamps at me, probably totally-unaware of the hazard that it and the
Enabling SUV driver had caused.
I saw another merge-impaired driver match speeds with a car that was
going about 90. The merge-impaired driver refused to accelerate or move
behind the other car. About 5 m before the end of the acceleration
lane, the merge-impaired driver tried to merge into the side of the
other car, but that driver didn't brake. The merge-impaired driver then
ended up on the shoulder and drove off the road. After turning back
onto the shoulder, it started flashing its headlamps at something,
probably angry that the other driver didn't "accommodate" its illegal merge.
What is wrong with these drivers this week?

new moon, actually. around here it was combined with heavy rain on
friday so I couldn't say which was the factor, but people definitely
left their intelligence at home when they left for work.

I just drove home in the snow.... bone heads risking crashes just so they
could have a better view of the tail-lights ahead than I had. I think it
would have been better to stay on the unplowed back roads.... but I saw a
down to pavement lane on the main road and took the bait... by the time
it reverted to an unplowed condition I was committed to the route.

I think that I'll stay away from places that measure distance in
metric until this clears. <g>

Expect the trend to continue; more drivers are granted driver's
licenses in any given week than motorists die.
The problem with stupidity is it's supply far exceed it's demand, and
yet we keep making more of it.

Provided that the results of super tuesday voting weren't hacked I'm
going to lean more towards 'insanity'. They've voted for General Buck
Turgidson for the republican nomination!
