Ah yes, the three deadly D words that mean disaster whenever they appear
together in any sentences.

Having spent about 10 years driving drunk on a regular basis, incident
free, as well as witnessing a reasonable number of foul-ups by sober
individuals, I can safely state it's the last two D words that make
the difference between life and death.

Heh, yeah, I don't get why negligently killing people is sorta okay when
a sober moron does it. The drunk people at least have an excuse. The
sober ones *should* know better.

Well you've proved you qualify for the middle D

There is no excuse for killing people, period. Believing that a person
is a safe driver because their blood alcohol content falls below a
certain level or their velocity falls below a value painted on a sign
is a clear sign that the person making the assessment falls into the
DF category, as is evidenced by "geezer."

The issue leading up to death by automobile is primarily a factor of a
driver's competence. That is why things such as BAC and SLs are not
relevant in the grand scheme of things, as exceeding the values set
for either are not a causal indication of a driver's competency.

I have known a number of people over the years who have faulted me, as
well as some others I know, because I/we do not adhere to the speed
limit, and/or I/we may have driven drunk. It is quite interesting to
hear them voice their complaints. Two of the individuals have been
involved in more fender benders in any given five year period of time
than I have in the 25 years I have been driving, and I have known two
of them to have totaled at least 3 vehicles they were operating
"safely and soberly".

Oddly enough, having ridden with each of these "sober, speed limit
abiding" morons once, I have refused to get back in any vehicle either
of them is driving. I would much rather take my time riding with the
drinkers and the speeders. I have not known any of those DUIers and/or
speeders to be involved in accidents of any nature, much less totaling
two cars in a 3 month (or, in one case, 2 week) period of time.

This is not to be read that I am advocating drinking and speeding.
What I am advocating is driver competency. It is my belief and
observation that competency, speed limits, and BAC are not synonymous.
Those who believe the terms are synonymous are incompetent, and as a
result, they are the greatest DFs and driving danger of all.

I'm not arguing with that. Hell, if you ask me, most people probably
shouldn't be driving.

That's one of the truest statements ever made. :-)

That's why you see increasing death ratios among vehicle miles driven,
even though more and more safety features and crackdowns on DUIs are
occurring. The wrong issues are being addressed.

An interlock to prevent driving while overtired, or during general stupidity?

Just make it easier to lose a driver's license and harder to get one
for the first place, and allow the death penalty for first time
offenders who drive without a license.
