My FIL has =80200 to spend on his first digital camera. He's asked me
to suggest something but to be honest I don't have a fucking clue and
don't want him wasting his money on a POS.
What is the discerning 65 year old Dubliner buying these days?

Heh, you know him then.

Canon PowerShot A620
7.1MP
http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/canon-a620.htm
I have one and find it very easy to use, it starts up in about 1second,
takes regular AA batteries, the flip-out screen is very useful and it takes
good quality images.

It's a fairly compact camera and though the buttons are small they are
nicely laid out in a fairly logical manner. The screen is bright with good
contrast so shouldn't be too much of a problem to read.

Nice, I fancy one for myself.

I bought the missus a Lumix (Panasonic) F27 a couple of weeks ago and it's
bloody amazing.
It's got quite a big lens, unlike a lot of digi cams and I reckon a bigger
lens is better than an ever higher megapixel count.
She took some pics of a flower which looks like it's on fire (red at t'
bottom, yellow at ' top). [1]
Not in macro, just "normal" and even zooming into the pic to the max,
there's no sign of pixelation. Not bad for 240ish quid.
[1]Apparently it's an Kniphofia or "Red hot poker"

I bought the PowerShot A520 for 150 quid recently. It does for me.
