AA eurocover [message #788330] Thu, 20 July 2006 17:59
Steve Parry
Hmmm .... just called the AA to add a weeks eurocover for the K for my trip
in August.

AA sales bloke on the end of the phone says "that'll be 76 quid please" ...
to which I told him I'd not bother and see what Bennetts would quote me, to
which he comes back and says he can discount that to 42 quid. Now that's
what I call a discount :)

You can get an annual Euro breakdown policy[0], in UK cover, from
www.quotelinedirect.co.uk for £59. Covers the vehicle only but you can
swap it to another vehicle free of charge just by logging onto their
website. I have it on my car for UK/Euro use and then swap it temporarily
to the bike [1] for a Euro trip.

I can understand you having AA personal cover in the UK to cover the whole
fleet but if you make more than 1 foreign trip a year then the annual
policy is cheaper.

[0] underwritten by Europ Assist
[1] the bike is covered in the UK by my Ebike insurance

And that's when I'd have told him to shove it up his arse for being a cunt
in the frst place. In fact, that's what I *did* say to a bloke last week
when I wanted a Snotoiler. First price he gave me was 95 quid and when I
told him the average price was 75, he said "I can do it for that". I got one
off Fleabay for 56, with next day delivery.

As far as insurance abroad is concerned, I just got cover included with my
normal policy, including recovery back here if things *really* go tits up
(from Bennets) and IIRC, the cost was about 30 quid extra.

Seems to me that all the UK breakdown companies are ripping you off
something chronic by charging more for continental cover. It should be
a standard part of the deal, not an optional extra costing a fortune
more.

Not *all*. See my post: the all-inc. service is provided by a French owned
company though.

So not a UK breakdown company at all, then. Sounds fairly typical of
furn breakdown organisations. They'd never get away with selling cover
that stops at a national border.

It is a UK breakdown company as it markets its products in the UK market.
My contract is with a UK Ltd company with a registered office in Sussex.

Should we redfine the AA as a foreign company now that is owned by venture
capitalists based in Germany & Luxembourg?

Quite. Especially as I don't imagine that they actually send out an AA
van in the event of a breakdown, rather sub it out to the local
AA-equivalent, for whom the AA would do the same on a reciprocal basis.

I'm a member of the Automobile Club of Luxembourg, which charges about
50 euro for basic membership, and you then pay an extra 20 or so to get
full cover all across the EU (and a few other countries as well).
Everybody has the extra cover - just the basic would be like having
cover just in your home county, but it goes to show that a massive
extra charge isn't necessary.

I get free breakdown cover which is included in my insurance. Which is
an oxymoron.
