FOAK: Full of sound and fury ... except for the sound bit. [message #788305] Thu, 20 July 2006 16:36

For some reason when I play videos from any web-page I don't get any sound
with them, but if I save them and run them in stand alone applications
they're fine.

The problem occurs in both Opera and IE, so it's not browser specific.

I've updated all of the software I can think of updating (i.e media player,
flash, Real, etc.)

It's not limited to one site.

All of the stupid options have been checked for - I don't have mute on, my
volume is turned up, my sound card is working, there isn't a power-cut at
the moment, etc.

Any bright ideas?

BTW, I was particularly keen to hear the product demo video from this site
.... http://www.saber-edv.com/home/ ... because I fancied a laugh.

No, now that you mention it and if I go to the system sound set up bit it
won't let me play sounds.

That doesn't sound good ... no pun intended.

Join the club.

XP home + SP2?

Go and try every single "cure" for this known problem (without success), get
the updates from MS which say they are for precisely this problem, reinstall
every driver which is even remotely associated with sound, spend hours
trying to find even more updated drivers, remove every piece of kit from
your pc which is associated with a/v, buy a new sound card, sit scratching
your head, do it all again. Give up.

Fuck all works.

I haven't tried a format and reinstall because I can't be arsed but I
believe that will be the only cure.

I suppose it's possible that the sound card I bought (eBay special) in case
the onboard sound had just gone tits up might not be compatible with SP2 but
I haven't bothered getting a more recent card yet.

Best of British to you, Sir

IF it's only started recently then he could probably try a rollback if
he has it enabled.

IME you're fucked. Live with it or re-install.

Had exactly that issue, tried everything on line. Nothing made a blind
bit of difference.

It's a know issue, with know understood cause.
