Heather picked me up from work and we drove to
http://www.theashpub.co.uk/ for a couple[ahem] of cold beers and a nice
lunch.
We were followed in by a [insert collective noun(1)] by a group of 12
Germans. In true stereotypical fashion the men were tall, thin and fair
haired and the women very fat. Both genders wore tight fitting loud
clothes and accessorised with bum bags, ruck sacks and stupidly large
cameras.
In true British fashion, none of them spoke any English and they made
jokes about the food.
The moment was made slightly more comic by the fact that the Ash Pub
was once home to the 344th Bomber Division and is covered in
memorabilia to mark just that.
(1) A Bureaucracy?

How do you know they were Germans? Sound much more like Austrian to
me.

Especially that bit.

Well, that's fair enough, no?

Correct. The only reason, historically, that these other cultures came
up with so many sauces was because their meat was substandard.

I thought roast beef, spam, haggish and the like where ways to mask the
quality of British meat... :-) Concerning meat and football, I'd rather
go for Argentina, honest...
Not seriously speaking, but anyway... has anyone ever seen a British
restaurant abroad which is not a ghetto for tourists and/or expats?

We now have an english restaurant in our village. It's called "On the
square restaurant", not "El restaurante en la plaza", but quite a few
spaniards go there to eat, and they've told me it's because it just
feels more civilised - their words. Also, they've discovered british
food, which is more than just a piece of burnt meat and some
boiled-to-death vegetables or soggy chips, which is what the local
cuisine is comprised of.
Quite simply, Johnny Foreigner can't cook.

I've heard that north of the Pyrenees people use things called knife,
fork, spoon, dish, glass, rather than fingers... is it what you are
talking about? :-)
Question... feeling fine in Antequera or being through a phase of "I

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Paul Carmichael <arse [at] tit.com>
saying something like:
>Never mind. Today is first day of feria. I have to drink in the street
>and pay extra for the privelege. And the judging of the "Miss Feria"
>starts at 3 in the morning FFS!
It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.
