Just a reminder for those who said they're going. I'll be there around

Gyp, let me know if you're going & I'll bring the Belkin.

I'll be there, but a little later I suspect.

I've just got to grout some tiles and fill a hole in a wall before I
come out to play. I suspect I'll be there at about 7.30.

Going slow is a good plan atm anyway - the roads are melting all over
the place.

So loads of grip then?

I wonder if they actually use different tarmac over here? I mean, it's
been over 30DegC and with massively strong sunshine almost every day
for the last three weeks here, and none of the roads are melting.

He has a point you know. With the state of the road around here, you
do get strips of pure molten tar.

We'll just have to dodge those bits.

I'm pretty sure the tarmac is different over there; more like
concrete, I thought?

Doesn't look any different. Black stuff with bits in it. Certainly
laid in the same way as UK roads.

Err... no. The surface may be very sticky, but it's no longer attached
to anything.

Something must be different, & I suspect it's the amount of stones.
More of 'em will help protect the tar from the sun, much like the
stones used to protect the felt on flat roofs.

More hard aggregate and concrete content, IIRC.

> Certainly
> laid in the same way as UK roads.

IIRC it's the mix between solvent (drying agent) and aggregate that
makes all the difference; UK stuff is cheap, laid fast and dries fast,
but breaks up and melts more easily. Continental stuff is slightly
slower to lay, takes longer to "cure", but is more durable as a result.
Plus we use more warm-laid overbanding, which is what melts first.

Also IIRC, the tarmacs used on the continent are the longer lasting but
more pricey stuff. We don't use these because, wait for it, the DoT
don't want a noticeable increase in their operating costs in the short
term. Never mind that it'd be cheaper in the long term ... again IIRC
there are tarmacs available now that could last 5 times as long as the
stuff we use, and only cost 4 times as much ... "you do the math". They
do use non-silicate road paint more often though, which is why some
continental white lines are nightmarish in the wet.

How do I know this? About 10 years ago I used to date a bird whose
brother-in-law was a road builder chappie. Fascinating sub-section of
engineering. Did you know there are about 20 different ways to lay
pavement, depending on cost, durability and speed of installation? And
which one do we use? The cheapest in the short term, shortest lifespan,
most dangerous for the pedestrian one, of course.

Same goes for repairs to existing carriageways; we patch crappy roads,
rather than resurface, despite the long term cost being higher, because
the bean counters want their operating costs, year-on-year, to look as
cheap as possible. Same goes, BTW, for the way we calculate the "cost"
of renewable energy systems. Everything's held to a medium term (55
years, IIRC) model, rather than a 250 or 500 year cost base. So tidal
barrages, for example "look" expensive, when they're actually sodding
expensive to build, but not to run over time.

I would think TOG would be the man to ask about this sort of thing, what
with his road haulage connections and suchlike.

ITYF, BICBW, that it's the specific chemical makeup (and cost) of the
binding tarmac layer, not the amount of stones, but I stand to be proved
wrong.

Probably, I was just guessing based on the fact that roads in hot

.... which is the colour of the binding layer, but again I'm discussing
this without having the faintest idea what I'm on about ... so, no
change there then.

This was taken in the Jura by someone I know. I came across a similar road
from Petit St Bernard through Bourg StM to Moutiers. It was like riding on
porridge.

Ah, I thought it was because the stones are light & the tar's black, so
lighter means a higher stone-to-tar ratio.

I'd have thought that more likely.

I wouldn't have said those around here are any different in appearance
from those in the UK. Then again, it's not like we're a 'hot place',
just sometimes somewhat warmer than blighty.

No, if you look closely at the binding layer, it's sometimes lighter
brown in colour, or white(ish), in the case of pure concrete.

That's repairs though, innit? Presumably covering cracks caused by
subsidence and/or cold.

S'wot it looks like to me, anyhoo.

Ha. "Unions called for employers to keep staff cool and called for a
change in the law to create a maximum working temperature. "

They should try working in my office. It's a balmy 31degC at the
moment, which is fairly typical for the afternoons atm, except on
those days when it's got _really_ hot.

It's 33.6 here in my 'office', & I've been decorating all day. Not my
idea of fun I can tell you.

I love the bit about the railways. We're used to leaves & snow, but
that's the first time I've heard about delays due to sunbeams on the
tracks.

Grimly Curmudgeon
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Bear <bastardDOTbear [at] gmail.com>
saying something like:

>IIRC it's the mix between solvent (drying agent) and aggregate that
>makes all the difference; UK stuff is cheap, laid fast and dries fast,
>but breaks up and melts more easily. Continental stuff is slightly
>slower to lay, takes longer to "cure", but is more durable as a result.
>Plus we use more warm-laid overbanding, which is what melts first.

Blaney might confirm this from personal eyeballing - somebody mentioned
this morning that roads in Dubai don't melt in daytime temps of 30+ and
I assume the Dubai gov't didn't skimp on the quality, rolling in money
as they are. There must be tarmac mixtures / compounds that are capable
of resisting fierce daytime heat and nightime coldness.

Why do you think they've had expansion joints in rails since their
inception and in the 'modern' era (since the 50s) pre-stressed CWR?

....because of sunbeams, Sunbeam

Err... so that means a sunny day shouldn't cause any problems, yes?
