| FOAK: Cheap WorkBench/ WorkTable [message #787671] |

Dear FOAK
I am looking for help to locate quite a reasonably priced work table or
bench of reasonable length (2m long at least, but not too wide) for affixing
a
bench vice to what I already have, as well as seating bike fabrication
related stuff like grinder, bench top drill etc for doing the odd job and
organising my life a bit better.
Any recommendations, new or used ? I would contemplate anything up to the
task, and that I could easily collect without a van. A rectangular office or
school style table, ex school wood working benches etc. Ideally in my area
which is Northants.
Cheers

Machine Mart were doing a great bench (steel) which would seem to suit your
requirements. It was around the 150 quid mark, but that looked like good
value as it's designed for the job and the right size. It's got a bottom
shelf too and a drawer IIRC.

Steel Stockholders...
10mm steel plate
40x40 box cut square and to length by them
stick or mig set
for uber stable table simply add some drilled plates to the bottom of the
legs and parabolt it to floor
will take anything you throw at it... makes fantastic flat surface for fabby
work... great for welding, just earth the bench
resurfaces easily, just attack it with the AG to remove welding spatter

Fantastic idea...although I don't yet have the kit to do that yet, but know
a man who might be able to help.

You must mean this one, but with vat its just a touch more.

However this one even, represents pretty good value for money

You mention "fabrication" and bolting a vice to the table. Both those
tables look like they would strain just under the weight alone of a
good vice. Most of the fabrication work I have done involves "gentle
coaxing" of a piece of steel back to being straight/square after
welding by placing it in a vice and bashing or bending it until the
desired shape is achieved.
I'd say build your own. It's very good practice and you get exactly
the size/height/strength you need. Of course, you wont save money - it
will probably end up being more expensive, but at least you know it
won't fold like a piece of tinfoil the first time you hit it hard.

Local scaffolding yard.
8 X 3m boards.
Local Timber merchants
4 X 75 x 75 sawn by 900mm (Legs)
8 X 75 x 75 sawn by approx 400 (Top board supports and shelf supports)
1 Box 2" No 10 Crosspoint screws
Pack or box of 4" No 8 or 10 crosspoint screws ( For screwing legs to
supports)
1 Pot wood glue
Local Hardware shop
4 X Angle shelf brackets approx 200 by 200 ish
1 pack rawlplugs to suit No 10 screws.
Screw and glue the supports to 4 of the boards at regular spacings to make a
top.
Screw and glue the legs to the cross supports
Screw the brackets to the top
Screw the whole shebang to the wall.
Add the remaining boards to the legs around halfway up to make a suitable
under top shelf for welders and the like.
Add whatever fixtures you need (Vice, welder etc etc)
Jobs a good un.
Cost?
Under £50

Good advice. Actually I am now after a MIG so it might well be worth taking
this approach, either that or I will knock one up out of wood entirely.

That's the one, and MM do lots of "vat free days", so an ask at the counter
would see you in posession of the next date.

Indeed it does and if bought on "vat free day" even more so.

Fair enough, yes. but I've got the extended length one with extra
plating on the 'vice bolt on' bit, seems sturdy enough to me.
Got the whole thing bolted to the ground and the back wall, solid.
Obviously yer not gonna be hammerin' horseshoes on the thing...

True - you need four vices for that to ensure you don't get kicked in
the bollocks.
