I'll be away for 10 days in August racing the pushbike across Wales.
As it's being run in the format of a rally we'll be camping every
night and it won't be in campsites.
One of the requirements for the race (and my own peace of mind) is to
have a fully charged mobile with you at all times.
Anyone got suggestions for keeping it charged with no access to
electrical outlets? I'll be keeping it switched off all the time but
I'd like to be able to call the wife most nights.
Solar chargers don't appear to get very good reviews and the ones that
get average reviews only appear to be available in America.

If it's a "requirement of the race", I'd ask the organisers how they expect
you to do it. If you need a phone for emergencies and not incoming, I'd keep
it turned off until needed and then turn off again. Or invest in a spare
battery or two and charge them before leaving. And take a car charger,
presumably there will be some sort of official vehicle around who can plug
it in for you if needed.

I'm sure there's a gizmo which you fill with AA batteries, plug into
the phone and wallah!.
Or how about one of those windup phone chargers? eg

Yeah, that's probably the best bet. But obviously if I use both that
and the one in the phone I'm stuck, hence why I was after a charging
mechanism.

Now that's not a bad plan. I need to carry a lot of AA batteries with
me to run the GPS.

It's a requirement and if I didn't want to phone my wife most nights
it wouldn't be a problem keeping it off. But I do and it's talk time
won't do 10 days.

Yeah, and the other 299 riders will also want to do the same.
Midn you, they must have something in place to provide electrical
outlets to charge peoples lights for the night stages.

He'll need to take his hands free kit too, so he doesn't have to hold the

ISTM that the best thing you can do is ask the organisers the
reason(s) they want you to carry a fully-charged mobile at all times.
To have the mobile switched off except for when you want to make a
call is one thing; probably the easiest solution is a spare,
fully-charged battery.
But if they want you to have a mobile so they can contact you e.g.
road condition reports, etc, then that is a different kettle of fish,
unless they run a 'txts on the hour' service. But even that might
stress the spare-battery scenario, and having your mobile on 24/7
would involve a far more technically-complex solution.

Perhaps, if I were to marry, I would need a very low maintenance wife
who didn't require constant attention or speaking to more than once or
twice a week.

Beh, he can just tell her that if she doesn't want his willy anymore
then he's quite willing and happy to entertain it elsewhere.
That'll work.

Heh. It'll certainly work but not quite in the way you're expecting.
Did you get a rack for your bike from Lozzo BTW?

I haven't got it yet. I imagine that when he's been able to drop it
of at the bike shop which is ten seconds away from my new place of
work he'll let me know.
Thanks.

Its pretty obvious. We're cycling off-road across Wales doing
distances of around 90km per day. The likelyhood of an accident or
illness is pretty high and we need to be able to call for help.

Good luck with trying to phone the emergency services with 2 broken arms,
jaw, pelvis and legs and trying to tell them where you are. "I'm in Wales..
about 100 yards from my bike". On the plus side, I think beri-beri, dysentry
and typhoid are pretty much under control in Wales these days.

Suspect not - IIRC Polaris is only a w/e event.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Ben <ukrm [at] bensales.com> saying
something like:
>Anyone got suggestions for keeping it charged with no access to
>electrical outlets? I'll be keeping it switched off all the time but
>I'd like to be able to call the wife most nights.
1. One of those micro hand gennies used in torches. Take a fair bit of
palm action, but it would put enough into the phone to keep it topped
up.
2. An old-fashioned bicycle tyre dynamo which you can flip on on long
straight bits. Be a bit of extra drag on the rough bits, though the more
recent models are much less draggy than the older ones and a bit more
efficient too.
3. Same as above but get a hub dynamo built into your wheel.
4. A micro-hydro power water wheel powered by piss. Just the thing to
break the ice at parties.
5. Camp under a set of Grid lines and wave the phone around.
6. There is no 6.

Erm, it isn't obvious that their procedures just might require *them*
to call *you* - which is a whole different ball-game,
battery-life-wise, which is why I asked.....

I have tried both solar and wind-up chargers from the Gadget Shop, but
my Nokia phone did not like them.
Looking at the website, it seems you will have some vehicular back-up.
Could you scrounge using the back-up's car battery for you overnight
stops? I know it sounds wimpish and the organisers may be loath to help
you for fear of opening floodgates, but I don't see any other practical
way, apart from a spare phone/battery.

There's two different Nokia charger specs using the same physical plug. One
"older", one about a year or two old. Old phones like recent chargers,
recent phones turn their noses up at old-spec chargers.
And you don't bloody know until you need 'em.

This was an old phone (well, a newish 3330 three or four years ago.)
