I'm toying with the idea of buying a new digital camera.
Generally I'm looking for one that can be used mostly as a point and
shoot but with a reasonably powerful zoom facility. It has been
suggested that the Finepix S5600 would suit my needs. I don't want one
any more bulky than this Finepix and about the =A3200 mark. I understand
that the Finepix is no longer being made but can be got for just under
=A3200 (=A3178 via ?Comet/Currys? on line, but I will need to invest in a
bigger memory card as it only comes with a 16 meg one.
What do people think of this model or would you reccommend a different
one?
TIA
Brian

Dunno about Finepix, but imagine there's nowt wrong with it.
I just bought a Canon A700, which has got 6x optical zoom - was ~£230 from
Jessops. Most if not all other cameras in its class appear to have only 3x
optical zoom.
Check out http://www.steves-digicams.com/ for reviews on a vast range of
cameras. It's a US site, but I think it's pretty good nevertheless.

If you can stretch to about £250 the panasonc Lumix FZ7 is an excellent
beastie
In my experience , Fuji cameras don't seem to cope well with moving images
and you end up with a lot of blurred pictures

I've just got one of these:
http://www.exilim.co.uk/exilimcard/exs500orange/
It does the job in a point and shoot way, and it's very small, batttery
lasts forever too.

I've just bought a Fuji F11, which is excellent.
Retails at £300, but you can find one much cheaper if you look around
(froogle, ebay). I got mine second hand for £160 (only had 500 pics taken).
It's an enhanced F10, which itself is excellent. I now know 5 people with
either the F10 or F11 and they're all happy.

Seconded on the FZ7, I bought one of those a few weeks ago, bloody good
camera. 12x zoom, with IS, on a Leica lens, and 6MP. Just over the £200
at £240 if you shop around. Expect to buy a spare (li-Ion) battery at
least a couple of 512MB SD cards as well. You can get 1GB cards at
7dayshop.com very cheap.
I got my FZ7 from <http://www.buyacamera.co.uk/>, fast delivery, and
they did a spare Hama battery for about £20. It's definitely worth
trying to spend the little extra IMHO.
Another one to check is the Olympus SP500, but that doesn't have IS.

I'm a big fan of the panasonic digital cameras, and have the FZ20 myself.
This has 12x Optical Zoom, and also has the added bonus of a manual focus
ring.
First time I've used it in anger at the weekend, but think it will be very
useful for Motorsport, e.g. being able to focus on a bit of tarmac where you
know the car/bike is going to arrive, rather than leaving it up to the
autofocus to hunt and find the vehicle at speed.

Still looking a bit amateur, but taken at zoom without a tripod, so I'm semi
proud of them.
I guess the fz20 is probably available from ebay for around the £200 mark
now that the FZ30 has replaced it.

Hi Brian,
I'd be surprised if the S5600 has been retired, as it's a fairly new
model. I got one in April, and am very happy with it. Best thing is the
10x optical zoom, plus it's been impossible to fool the metering on it
so far... I've taken pictures in tricky lighting and it's got it right
every time. Any specific questions? Will happily send you some pictures
if you'd like an idea of the quality of the lens...
BTW, it was c.=A3220 incl. a 512MB card, from ukdigitalcameras.com.

Thanks for some excellent thoughts, am still pondering. Bit like my
riding really.
