Paging Sweller - signallers strike [message #787137] Mon, 17 July 2006 19:53
Paul Corfield
I know it's not your gang of brothers that threatening to down tools but
what's your view on the odds of the impending signallers strike going
ahead this Friday / Saturday?

I was rather hoping to head to the West Midlands this weekend and I'd
like a view on whether I should be booking up to travel by rubber wheels
rather than steel ones.

TIA

Radical option: motorcycle?

Not forgetting the other one one Thursday/Friday/Saturday next week.

A prime opportunity for me to WFH - my round trip is 3 hours at the best
of times, without Mr Crow and his cohorts doing their best to slow me
down.

Yep, and from past experience, services will be winding down all Friday
morning.

At this rate I won't be able to get out of Walthamstow to even get a
coach - the damn tube network is half closed down on Saturday as well.

I notice in 'other places' that it's now been called orf.

Well I did do it. Got the humid delights of Wolverhampton and
Birmingham.

It felt terribly provincial - which will sound terribly snobby but there
really is a different sort of "run down" feel to so many places outside
of London.

Your phrasing is amusing - it sounds like you're saying that the "run
down" feel outside of London is different to the "run down" feel in
London :-) Having navigated various bits of south London last
weekend, I can assure you the provinces don't have a monopoly on
run-down-ness

I felt a lot of London felt run down compared to Birmingham and
Solihull.

However, both those places have had major re-developments within the
last couple of years.

I think it is different. All the run down parts of London are still part
of a vibrant capital and world city. The provinces lack that vibrancy -
it just felt "less" and the people seemed to be "put upon".

I don't recall saying that nowhere in London was run down.

I can't imagine that in a weekend wedding anniversary visit you visited
the depths of malaise in Hackney or Peckham. Poor Mrs Sales if you did!
I struggle to think of anywhere near Regents Park that can be described
as run down.

Not been to Solihull but you don't exactly have to get far from the
absolute centre of Birmingham with its shiny new shopping centre to see
dereliction and decay. I travelled through miles of it yesterday.

A lot of that shabby looking decay is still working industry. Low tech
stuff that will be gone in a few years when the buildings become condemned
through lack of investment.

B'rum is going through the same deindustrialisation that London experienced
in the 20th century. It's not pretty, as the developers are unlikely to get
planning permission whilst a building is being used for manufacturing. They
circumvent this process by letting the building decay beyond repair so that
it has to be demolished. It's almost as if the planners are in denial about
the inevitable changes in commerce.

Your use of the word provincial was spot on.

Well, London *is* a vibrant and capital city. Note that I'm not one

I posted because I thought your intended meaning was different from
the meaning I read. I was wrong.
