Number plates [message #786996] Mon, 17 July 2006 15:18
Rick
It's just occurred to me that my number plate might be worth more than the
bike.
How would I go about finding a realistic value of D666 *** ?
The cherished plate sites quote anything from £600 to £1200 for similar
numbers but I know I'm not that lucky.

TIA

The dealers hold thousands of plates and quote values. Ask yourself how
many of them are ever actually sold....
Try an eBay auction.

Have you tried ringing them up & asking?

IIRC you can't transfer a bike's registration to a car, so you've a
limited market already.

It will cost you your soul. What's that worth?

Just done that - they offered £400 for the plate. Nice to know that when the
bike is totally knackered (not long now) it's still worth something

They offered £400 - or they told you they could get you £400? They normally
work by selling it for you, rather than buying it and selling it on.

Did you mention it's currently on a bike? As has been mentioned, you can
take a plate car->bike, but not (IIRC) other way - people were buying a
shedload of mopeds and transferring plates to them before retention
certificates were available.

Don't forget it needs a current (or recently expired - I think three
months) MOT to transfer the plate off.

Depends entirely on what the *** is. If it's SAT or NIK it's worth a bit
more than XPB.

ISTR that was changed a couple of years ago.

Are there any special rules for motorcycles?
No. Motorcycles and mopeds can participate fully in the number transfer
arrangements, providing they meet all the normal transfer requirements
(see "What are the requirements for participating vehicles?")

It used to be the other way round. I know of number plate companies who
used to buy large numbers of Tomos mopeds or CZ125s to put numbers on
prior to selling them to car owners.

You certainly used to be able to, which was why so many people wopuld
store them on old mopeds and suchlike.

Oh, OK - I knew there was some sort of restriction, but obviously I
got it the wrong way round.

The DVLA currently has reg. numbers starting J,K,L,M,N,P,R,T,W,X,Y all
followed by 666 and your choice of letters for £250 including, IIRC, the
transfer fee. X666 and Y666 plus letters are £450 for some strange reason.
