Aye. Oakleys are the way to go.

Bwaahaahaa. I've got a battered (but new lenses) old pair of FMJs that
are probably still worth more than that.

Unless you suffer from a deap seated clumsy cuntitude when it comes to
sunglasses.

I have not owned a pair of sunglasses that I havn't sat on, scratched
with sand, lost, stood on, dropped off my head, bent or generally
fucked up.

Sunglasses for me are a disposable single summer item, so tend to be
inexpensive.

Just to contradict that I have had my current prescription sunglasses
for 3 years now. Although I did stand on them and one of the lenses is
scratched.

My old oakleys were great for this - the arms would pop off rather
than break and the lenses could pop out and back again without
breaking. My new ones are all titanium frames, so just won't bend or
break at all. Allegedly.

no idea. I mean, I've seen subglasses for sale for less than £40, but
they look shit. I think the least I have ever paid for sunglasses[1]
is about 60 quid for a pair of Killer Loops at Sunglass Hut at
Stansted airport.

[1] at last count, I have 6 pairs of sunglasses - arguably this is
perhaps too many.

Nope, its not. You can never have too many sunglasses, guitars or
bikes.
So stop feeling just that teeny bit guilty about it.

Oakley Monster Dogs in black with extra black bits.

I also use some Police sunglasses which look rather nice, straight
arms, rubber bits, but the Oakley's are polarized.

Both did and do cost substantially more than £40.

I just got some Nike V.Cadence glasses which I like very much - good clear
lenses and fit close to the head so they're good under a helmet. They're a
bit over 40 quid though - about 60 seems the cheapest.

I've got a pair of Police sunglasses. After 5 years, they're finally
falling apart. Even then, the repair is only going to take a bit of
Araldite. I've been quite chuffed with them.

But I may go for new sunglasses, meself. And it appears that Oakleys
are the choice.

I bought a pair of Oakley Unknowns for =A389 in the sale, then
promptly scratched a lens 2 days later and had to pay =A340
for replacements. D'oh!

They've been great sunglasses though, and I fall into the
clumsy fuckwit category (see above) and they've lasted
well so far ~2 years and counting.

If you find some £5 sunglasses that you like then why bother paying
£300 for sunglasses? Petrol stations stock decent aviator sunglasses
and Debenhams or Boots usually have a good selection of their own
brand sun specs.

If you go to www.oakley.com, Mens, Sunglasses, Polarized, View
Polarized Sunglasses then you can see my old Monster Dogs in the
middle. Now $149 (Polished Black/Black Iridium)
< http://mi.oakley.com/site/media/cache/43a1aa4c1ef07.png_0_0_ 0.jpg>
but the lens is a lot darker than that and it's worth noting that
they're quite chunky.

Have you used Polarized lenses before? If you plan to use them with
your helmet it might be an idea to find your local licensed Oakley
stockist (this will not be a place like Specsavers or Vision Express)
and try to stick them to your face with your lid on and then close the
visor.

It's also worth noting that polarized lenses filter the light in an
odd way through your visor. You may well notice rainbow effects on
the stress points through your visor and if, like me, you have a Shoei
pinlock fog shield thinger it does some very, very odd things to the
light. Glancing down at the mirrors took a bit of getting used to as
the image I see through the lenses is purple and green depending on
how much I tilt my head.

Polarized lenses aren't for everyone, but they do cut down on
reflections a *lot* and give things like grass and the road surface a
matte effect.

Many el-cheapo sunglasses filter out visible light but not UV. The
darker view causes pupils to dilate and allow even more UV in than
normal, meaning that while the world might seem darker, your eyes are
being slowly roasted.

Oakley are good, but far (far far far) from indestructible. I've
destroyed two sets so far, and done a good job on the third. That said,
even if you fuck them beyond belief out of warranty, they'll do a cheap
replacement set by post as a replacement.

Expensive sunglasses is so 90s. I've spend loads over the years but I
just kept losing or breaking the cunts. Other than Bausch & Lomb all
the other brands a the emperors new clothes.

Every time I go to a bike related event I find the Anglo American
Eyewear stand and pick a few pairs for a fiver a piece.

These work very well under a bike helmet if that's a concern...

http://shadestation.co.uk/cPath/-1_1_37/products_id/188/prod uct_info.php

I use some of them for riding and so A-Wires for posing.

I've been a big fan of Oakley for a long time but I recently got some
of these for cycling:

http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=15473

They're 80 quid, with as good a lense as an Oakley but with these
Adaptalite lenses that go from dark to light in a matter of a couple
of seconds. Highly recommended.

Oakley's are quite a statement usually. I would suggest trying some

I had some some A-Wires on under a lid during a spill where I got a
pretty hard whack on the head. Because they sit so close to the eye
socket, wrapping over the bridge of the nose, and they're so bloody
tough, most of the force was transferred straight to the bridge of my
nose, with predictable results.

There's a lot to be said for shitty fall-apart-at-any-opportunity
frames, especially under a lid where nobody can see them anyway.

I got some of these when in SF earlier this year

Way cool (and a much more iridium green than the pic shows) but I
can't get them on under my lid, as the frames are just too rigid to
bend against the side of the head. They'd be fine once on, but I'm
still having to use my old FMJs on the bike.

But not at many of them, these days. The weird patterns in windscreen
glass are caused by the toughening process and toughened windscreens
went out with the Ark. You're so 1970s.
