Mystery rattle update [message #786345] Fri, 21 July 2006 06:42
Steve Liggett
A few days ago I posted a question trying to figure out a
strange rattle or clunking sound that I was getting when
I went over bumps or used the rear brake. Last week I got
some help to look at the bike, and we sorta narrowed it
down to the motor mount and/or stabilizer links. I
had to go out of town for a few days, so I didn't get
a chance to do anything more except think about it. I
decided that the first step would be to replace the
front motor mount, and today was the day to do that.

I got everything unbolted and stuck a floor jack under
the engine case to lift it up off of the motor mount.
So far, so good. Then I went to slip the old mount
out. Waitaminnit! Something ain't right here! In case
you don't know, the motor mount sits in the frame, and
there is a triangular plate bolted to the engine that
connects the engine to the motor mount. Well,
that little plate was just flopping around. Both
bolts that attach it to the engine case were loose --
in fact, the nut was missing from one of them. If I
had any doubts about where the problem was, that
pretty much eliminated them. I probably could have
just tightened them and buttoned things up, but
since I had the new motor mount, I put it in, even
though the old one didn't seem too bad.

Took the bike for a little spin tonight, and everything
is fine. No more strange noises, and the bike
seems a lot more solid and handles better. The
handling wasn't too bad before, but as loose as
that plate was, I'm surprised that the bike wasn't
squirrelly as hell. And it was probably loose
when I was up in the Big Horn and Beartooth mountains
a couple of weeks ago. Not a good place to have
handling problems.

Well, after all that, have a tasty beverage of
your choice on me -- and doubles for everyone who
replied with suggestions on my last post. It was
greatly appreciated.

A couple of years ago I heard and felt a very loud noise as I turned
left a few blocks from home. The shock was something like a sledge
hammer hitting the frame. I cautiously made it home and after some
investigation discovered the upper engine mount had departed this
life.

I check all the mounts now at each oil change.

Glad to hear it was an easy fix, thanks for the update.

Road Glidin' Don had a post about this back in April. I think he posted
pictures on his website.

Thank you for the update, and thanks also for the brew (although I think
Shirley...if it really is Shirley... gave me the stink-eye when I ordered
it).

It's info like this that I really like about this place. Prost! Lechaim!
Muddinyereye!
