New Sporty in August [message #786200] Thu, 20 July 2006 01:51

Have a tall frosty on me or a drink of choice.

We I did it again, I will picking up a vivid black 1200 50th Anniversary
Sporty August signed the papers this afternoon. I am not ready to Geezer
Glide even in my fifties. I have been riding sportys since 1971 and have
been addicted ever since. I own a 2003 XLC 100 anniversary and recently
purchased a 1957 with 20k on it in almost show room condition from a private
collector. The next thing on my radar is a 1982 xl to complete the set.
Hind site is 20 20 I sold my 71 in 1989 what a big mistake.

After owning a hard mounted Sporty and then getting the rubber mounted I
think you will be pleaseantly surprised at the difference in ride and
handling. Doing 25 miles at 65 or 70 mph on my old would wear me out and the
ride would seem forever. Though around town was fun. But driving the rubber
mount with the proper seat and handlebar adjustments you can do 100 or 200
highway miles easy.

Yep... put a nice Mustang seat and raised the bars on my
wife's Sporty and it is a much better ride than the old '91
that I had.

I did a demo ride at the dealer on one of the rubber mounted 1200s it was
night and day from my 03 or any other sporty I have rode. One of the guys
at the dealer was explaining that the all the 07s are fuel injected. He
also said that along with the fuel injection HD had done some minor tweaking
like better balancing the crank making the sportys even smoother. When I
did the demo ride I did notice that the sporty 3000 rpm vibration was almost
un-noticeable. Every sporty I have owned always had the 3k built in
vibrator it is going to be odd not to have it any more.

=====================================================

I just happened to come across this forum, Glad to see some guys who
like their Sportsters.

I have an 04 XL, black, that I had rebuilt last fall. It was an 883
when I bought it new.

Now, after having "Nallin Racing Head Service" in Frederick, Colorado,
put Axtell 1250 cylinders, light weight pistons, push rods, their
stage II heads, a twin tec ignition, and a 42 MM mikuni, I have a real
exciting bike. I also run Rinehart Racing staggered duals.

Two old highschool friends and me,will be hauling our bikes to Sturgis
this August (We are all over 62 years old), It will be good to get back
there and re-ride the main street at Sturgis and all the old touring
roads on my most exciting Sportster ever.

By the way, regarding the rubber mounted engine. In my opinion, it is
the best thing Harley Davidson could have done for the bike.

Congrats on the new bike!
I rode a demo XL1200 at Myrtle Beach in 2004 just for shits and
giggles. I was curious to see the results of their new mounting
system. The Sporty is still a great fun bike.

Just might be able to help you on that. All original, with custom paint,
the orig. bronze color tins can still be found in the garage too.

Yep, I did a demo ride several weeks ago on a rubber mounted sporty it was a
total different experience from my frame mounted sporty. The kicker was I
was not planning on buying a 50 Anniversary Sporty. I was looking at them
online and drooling. The ole lady said what was I drooling over? I said a
2007 50 Anniversary Sporty she said buy one so I did.

When I was at the dealer they only had one in their book and none coming in
after. They said they may get one more so a bird in the hand and laid down
a grand so now just waiting till mid August.

I was talking to the owner who owns several dealerships and he said 250 of
the 50 anniversary are going over seas and the remainder of the 2000 will be
sold state side. It looks like I got lucky and to boot I got it for MSRP
$9795 I don't know if it was because I financed it with HD they even offered
a big discount on the 7 yr warranty which I declined.
