2006 MAMBM -> KNOXVILLE & Twin Cam 88 Issues [message #786052] Tue, 18 July 2006 06:53

Great weekend and IRL seeing old friends and meeting some new ones. Maybe it
was my
pink jacket which Shirley talked me out of.

Also, I will remember this year's MAMBM on accounta riding through though
several good
doses of serious rain, both to and fro, and the strange whirring noise my
'99 FXDX
made after pulling into Torc's Cove after the 335 miles return ride from
Martin.

As I may have mentioned earlier I had examined the rear chain tension shoe
about 2 weeks before heading for the 2006 Great Gardiner Gabfest. I was
motivated on
accounta horror stories relating to their failure (Link to ET Larry, RHSD,
and also the rmh
FAQ TrinCam 88 topics). I didn't look at the front cam tensioner since it is
not visible without pulling the cam support plate. I assumed that if the
rear plastic shoe was OK same as the front.

A little bike background....I rode that bike ('99 FXDX) back from San
Francisco 4 years
ago this last April having bought it from a good friend. I had added about
6K miles during three annual visits to SFO and three of our 2,000 mile rides
about the Great Western Boonies before I bought it. The bike had about 28 K
on it when I left SFO in 2002 for the return 2800 mile ride to Knox via
Death Valley, LV,
Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, South Rim, Flagstaff and then I-40 east to K Town.

Very speedy Twinky with 2/1 Thunderheader, 42mm Mikuni carb, and SE Ignition
with 42,000 current miles.
Being an early Twin Cam it was recalled by Dudley Perkins in San Fran for
the cam gear bolt and outer cam bearing replacement, or so I thought.

Fast forward to now.

I figured thata tensioner shoe had worn out and that the source of
the noise was the tensioner shoe retainer rubbing on the chain. An
examination of the cam drive sytem revealed the following:
1) Both of the plastic shoes showed very little wear. This was not the
source of the noise.
2) The rear outer bearing was missing one ball and part of its retainer
assembly. This was obviously was the source of the noise. Damn lucky I
caught it in time.
3) The cam gear bolt had been updated but the outer cam bearings had not
been replaced. Did someone say Stealer Dealer?

As far as I know, the cam gear/bearing (INA) problem has now been solved by
the replacing all of the cam shaft bearings with Torrington needle
(inner) and Torrington roller (outer) bearings.

And I now have a set of adjustable push rods.

If I were inclined to worry (What? Me worry?) I could wonder where the
missing ball bearing and retainer chunk went. But I assume that if it went
somplace nasty I'll find out.

Also, I believe that this year's Twinkies have improved (?) bearings and
hydraulically actuated metal chain tensioners. Maybe after all these years
(2006-1999 = 7) the TC88 cam shaft bearing problems may have finally been
solved.

Actually, 8 model years. Prolly just swappin' one problem for new ones. I'm
gonna be the guinea pig, new barge should show up on a truck today.

Enjoyed the report, VK. Glad you caught it in time. My 03 is nearing 30k so
I will likely have to deal with the tensioners soon. Hope to do geared cams
at the end of the summer, (before the ride to SNIFF) and eliminate the
worry. It's what HD should have done in the first place.

Don't bet the farm, although I agree the latest iteration is better. The
tensioners were improved for the 06 models, to hydraulic (similar to the new
primary chain shoe) instead of springs. Better chain too, supposedly. Still
have a plactic shoe, though, and will still need regular replacement. HD
isn't gonna put thier service network outta business just yet. Or ever,
likely.

Enjoyed visiting with you at MAMBM.
