The good news? Kick-ass excuse should I suck in Idaho.
The bad news? Reconstructive surgery in my future...again.
Finally got in to see the hand specialist today. This is the same guy
that installed the external fixator on my wrist in 2000. I hurt my
right wrist riding in WA with the Harrell's in May, and I hurt my left
thumb crashing on street tires in the mud and snow a week later. Went
to the ER, "Oh, it's just a deep bruise, you'll be fine." Right...Went
to see my regular doctor 3 weeks later when it didn't become "fine."
She said torn or detached tendon maybe. I had to wait 4 weeks to get in
to see the hand guy, which proved to be detrimental to my long-term
health. Bastards...
Anyway, I've got a torn and detached Ulnar Collateral Ligament in my
left thumb. It could have been repaired had I been in there 6 weeks
ago...had the ER doctor actually *looked* at my thumb (instead of just
x-rays that said nothing was broken) and realized it wasn't just a
bruise...had I been able to get in to see my doctor earlier than 3
weeks afterwards and demanded something be done NOW...had I been able
to get an appoinment with the hand guy sooner than 4 weeks out. (ok,
I'll say it: had I not been goofing around in the mud and snow on
street tires in the first place.)
On the bright side, since it is so fubar'd, I won't be doing any more
damage to it by riding with it like that. My doctor said it certainly
wouldn't be the *responsible* thing for him to recommend riding with it
like that, but since it needs to be reconstructed anyway, and since he
knows I'm going to continue riding regardless, what the hell? He said
if I can deal with the pain and discomfort with it like that, then to
go for it. He wants me to splint it up right away, though. He told me
to bring in a handlebar with a grip on it so that when they make the
splint I'll still be able to ride with it on. Yay!!
The surgery itself is almost identical to the ACL reconstructions I had
done. They take a tendon out of the back side of my wrist (he said
there are quite a few people that don't even have that tendon, kinda
like wisdom teeth) and attach it to the bone where the UCL used to be.
He said I'd only need 6 weeks off riding (hah! "only"...) with 8 weeks
being the worst-case scenario.
I'm not looking forward to it, that's for sure, and I'm a bit bummed
out about the whole thing.
But I must say, the overriding emotion right at the moment is pure
unadulterated joy at being able to ride in Idaho!! I mean, I knew the
thumb was messed up, and I figured it would be bad news, and I was
hoping I wouldn't hear, "Oh, no...you can't possibly ride with it like
that! You need surgery/cast/splint/etc right now!" I was hoping for a
magic corisone shot with no residual pain by the time we left, but I
know better.
So, if I'm lagging behind in Idaho, it's certainly not due to a glaring
lack of talent, it's my thumb...I can't help it!
So, if I'm sucking wind and gasping for air after 50 miles and
complaining that I couldn't possibly ride even 1 more mile, it's
certainly not due to a glaring lack of cardiovascular conditioning,
it's my thumb...I can't help it!
So, if I'm stumbling around the campfire, slurring my words and
laughing and just having a great time in general, it's certainly not
due to a glaring lack of self-discipline with the wine and pain pill
bottles, it's my thumb...I can't help it!
Right now, all I can think about is "I'll be riding in Idaho soon!"
I'll worry about that "Crap, another f'ing surgery to endure..." when I
get back.
9 days to go!!

Wow Tami!
I hope everything turns out ok. I know the rehab will suck.
Cindy and I have pushed up the departure to Saturday the 29th. THis will
give her more of a chance to recover from the drive without missing out on
the social events. She is even planning on renewing her drivers permit as
long as the Doc says it's cool. MS has a way of stealing shit from you.
Anyway, we can't wait to meet everyone again for the first time. We may make
it in on the 31st now. WHOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I walk around the lumber yard, I can always spot a dirt biker. We're the
ones limping and still trying to work :)
Good luck with the surgery.

Right on. The riding is great and all, but the social stuff is tons o'
fun!

That's cool! Maybe she can borrow someone's rental car to drive around
the campground. Jay C makes it look really fun.

There are long-time guests that come back to the hotel every now and
again and they always ask me if I have any new hardware or scars to
show them. I hate to disappoint my fans.

Tami, Tami, Tami..
So, uh, this ISN'T the hand you tweaked here at our place, it's the other
one you tweaked in the mud, right?
At least I'll still be able to sleep at night.
Sorry for the inevitable limitations, but you know we'll gladly deal with
the consequences for your company.
Sounds like it'll be a freakishly fast rehab, by your standards. That's
sorta good news, in a silver-lining sort of way.
Be careful on those damn stairs for the next 9 days, OK?

"Attempt?" I swept both motos, baby! I'm on the top of the podium!
I had to park that Buckley character in order to do it, but I
persevered, rode my own race, stayed within myself and tried not to do
too much with the track.

At least I had the decency to do it *before* arriving in Idaho this
time.
>

That's correct. The wrist I hurt at your place (hmm...the wrist I
hurt...while riding *your* bike...on *your* private
property...obviously due to a defective trail and improperly placed
tree...Hey! I think I'll go shopping for a new CRF Junior!) is only
"severely sprained" and, according to my doctor, we can worry about
those cysts on the tendons later after we fix the left hand. On a
brighter note, I am not to do anything that makes it hurt, which is
mostly washing bikes and cars and dishes. Odd that it hurts worse after
those activities than it does after riding. Don't you think a sprained
wrist would feel better after 2 months?
> At least I'll still be able to sleep at night.
Oh, yes; Get some sleep. The thumb injury was totally not your fault!

Thanks! I'll try to keep the whining and complaining to a minimum.

Yeah, when he started bandying about words like "reconstruction" and
"spare tendon" I started getting nervous, and even got a little queasy.
But it doesn't sound *too* bad. At least I'll be able to walk and work
and stuff. I might have to drive the cargo van to work again, though,
which will suck Big Time.
> Be careful on those damn stairs for the next 9 days, OK?
Yeah, I'm thinking about going out the front door from now on.
Our 2nd softball season starts the day before we leave. We told the
coach we'd be gone by then. No sense risking unnecessary injury the day
before leaving.

Wow, our dilemma is so alike it's scary (only difference in the entire
story above: mine is the right thumb).
So yeah, for you Americans that think we have it great here in Kanuk
Land think again. Our "communist-like regime" (as you Yankees like to
think of it) isn't as wonderful as you may think. If the idiot doctor
that looked at the x-rays had told me about the consequences of torn
ligaments and how it should be followed up quickly (instead of the good
news that nothing was broken) I wouldn't have missed a lot of races and
have believed I'd be partially handicapped for life for as long as I
had. Also it would have spared me about 80 visits to the physiotherapist
(yes, I have to go see my beloved physio later today - ordeal still goes
on).
So yeah, fucking arrogant doctors that think so highly of themselves.
Ought to come down from their pedestal and actually help those looking
for help. Bastards.

The only thing more fun than beating the shit out of a rental car
through a campground, is doing it without a driver's license. Besides,
I DO need a surrogate (man, I wish I could go).
Tami - you are the only person that busts herself/himself up more than
me. Heal up fast and well so you can keep winning the crown (please -
it's my only hope). The thumb ligament is a suck - I've never had that
specific injury, but learned to always check for it whenever I get
"skiiers thumb" - which, unfortunately, is fairly often.
Good tidings -

I've been finding that riding somehow "breaks loose" the arthritis at
the base of my thumb so it actually hurts less after 2-3 consecutive
days of hard (for me) riding than it does normally.

I can empathize - when the doc talked about peeling a piece of calf
muscle "like string cheese" to use to make my ankle work again I really
didn't want to picture that. Now I wish I had a video - the ankle
works great - he did a fine job :)

Really.
Ladies and Gentlemen, have you met my best friend Joe?
Glad I'm not like that...

Can anyone get some more of those bird bombs?

You you Joe, I'll share at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Cranberry scones made with olive oil margarine.
Assuming my trailer freezer repair is successful,

I'll get the cook working on that this weekend. If I mix

A promise is a promise...
Oh, the trailer fridge & freezer seems to be working better than
ever.

Okay fine. I'll play harder.
I tried to return some obviously defective tickets the other day. The
clerk thought I was trying to be funny.
