Of the hook on the 85 vs 125 debate [message #785489] Wed, 19 July 2006 23:01

I've been scrambling to figure out what size bike to get 'The Boy' (and
thanks for the help along the way), but he had an accident this past
weekend which will keep him from even thinking about dirtbikes until
next year. He'll be bigger by then, so it looks like the 125 size
wins, but I'll have lots of time to find something.

The Boy was visiting his grandfolks in NJ, and while down there, biffed
doing a (and I quote) "huge backside air 180" on a vert ramp at a local
skateboard park. His foot slipped off the board in the air, and caught
the coping when he was coming down, breaking off his foot. Not really,
but that is the general idea - triple break of his ankle and lower leg
- on the slide down the ramp, his ankle was supposidly bent sideways so
his foot was against his calf ...sole facing up!! Gaaaaak!

He's been in a NJ hospital since, and had a really tough couple of
days, but they put in a plate and a pile of screws on Monday, which
stablized things enough that he seems to have started to heal. The
couple of days before the surgery were pretty ugly, and the day after
was really ugly (pain, high fever, etc.), but he bounced back strongly
overnight and hopefully should be coming back to NH tomorrow.

He won't be walking for the rest of the summer, so if nothing else,
it'll give him an excuse to spend 8 hours a day practicing his guitar.
I told him that if he works hard enough, come winter, he could be a
skinny-legged Jimi Hendrix. At least skinny-legged on one side (like
Popeye on the other).

I picked up an old Yamaha Moto-4 80cc mini-quad for free yesterday.
Hopefully I can get it running - my plan is for The Boy to use it as a
wheelchair.

First one gets skewered with a horseshoe stake last month, then this --
I can hardly wait to see what the little one is gonna do.

Good grief! Sorry to hear the bad news, Jay. The last time I did a
huge backside air 180.... oh wait.... uhhh... nevermind.

You don't want to know.

Man, I hope your clan heals up soon. How are the nerves to
your son's foot? This type of break can sometimes screw
up the connections. I hope that all is well.

How's your daughter's knee coming along?

IF you sue the grandfolks for child endangerment and stuff, you can get
him a nice new shiny bike!

Gaaaaak is right! That's gross! I don't suppose the grandfolks whipped
out the camera in time to catch all the glory?

Ahh...the benefits (and dangers) of youth. I'm sure he'll be ok in no
time. He and his sister can compare scars when all is said and done.

Great idea!

Well, you're a hard livin' bunch; these things happen. I mean, they
could have gotten hurt walking down the stairs going to work, or doing
laundry or something equally stupid.

I hope everything goes ok with The Boy. Tell him we're thinking good
healthy thoughts for him.

As always, photos appreciated <G>

That sucks bad, Jay. I'm really sorry to hear it. I hope the little bugger
heals fast and right without complications. Maybe Tami has some extra bubble
wrap she could send you for the youngest before it's too late.

BTW, what's his name?

No particular reason. Certainly nothing to do with dozens of
spodes converging on Idaho, sitting around the campfire and
drinking.

I'd be more than happy to share my bubble wrap. It's not like I'm using
it or anything.

Hey Spodes -

Thanks for the good thoughts. The Boy (Erik) will benefit on some kind
of Karmic plane, I'm sure. He had his follow up this morning, and it
turns out that the worst of the breaks occured a few nanometers or so
above the growth plate, so the biggest of the potential complications
(non-growing bone) was avoided - whew! He is on the way back to NH as
we speak - should be home for dinner! He is currently outfitted with a
protective boot, which apparently looks like a great big Motocross boot
(I knew I could get this on-topic somehow), which he thinks is cool. I
have a feeling the coolness will wear off soon enough, however. It's
going to be a tough and long recovery, however, but I remain hopeful
that he will be back in action in time for snowboard season.

I also got the Moto-4 to turn over last night. I put a charger on the
battery, hit the starter and "whoop-whoop-whoop". Oddly enough, when I
hit the starter again, nothing. Might be a bad switch or something.
At any rate, I was encouraged enough to tear it apart. I dug out the
carberator, and now know why it wouldn't run - it was the most
disgusting carb I have ever seen. 5 year old gas makes for some really
nasty sludge - between that and the 1/8" of corrosion debris that was
all over everything, it is going to be a serious PITA to clean up. I'm
confident, however, that the little beast will start right up once I
get the carb straightened out.

BTW, for those curious, my daughter's knee is doing absolutely great.
She benefitted greatly from her superhuman leg strength - a classic
Jayesque characteristic - she bounced back at a rate which bewildered
her doctors and therapists. She's been biking and actually played a
little soccer this past week. She was a Varsity soccer starter last
year - the big fear was that she wouldn't be healed up enough to make
tryouts (which start up in a week or two). It still is going to be a
tough road, since she has a fair amount of muscle mass to re-generate,
but at least she has a fighting chance. Other than the disfiguring
scar, she should return to 100% quickly, especially if she is working
out daily with the soccer team.
