a/c blows cold when it is cool outside
when it is hot the a/c stops working
i have heard that the a/c switch on the dash could cause the problem, any
other ideas?

The most likely cause is low refrigerant, caused by a leak. The air coming
out of the vents should be 40ºF-45ºF on a hot day, max air setting, doors
and windows open. You may be able to restore performance with a recharge
kit from an auto parts store, but the system really needs professional
attention. Lots of these guys are dishonest or incompetent, and will give
you a big bill and your vehicle back, without all the leaks fixed. Ask
around for who has the best reputation locally.

Your AC won't work right if the coolant reservoir isn't full enough (air
in cooling system). . The engine doesn't generate the right signal to
the AC if it's sensors aren't immersed / reading correct temps.
Top up the reservoir (to MAX) three days in a row and see if it's
'using' coolant (displacing air, actually).
P.S. Have you changed the Cabin Filter lately?

curly, you are rockin'
i think this might be on the right track! the coolant was low.
i had the a/c problem a few weeks ago, i had low coolant at that time
too. i filled it up and the a/c problem went away, i didn't put the two
together though.
the civic has a cabin filter?
thanks.
