Noise in front [message #781815] Wed, 19 July 2006 23:14

Hi,

My car is a standard gear '96 Honda Civic.

It has a big noise when going at low speed, especially when going up
hill or making a sharp turn. The source of the sound is under the car,
between front wheels and close to right wheel (probably).

Do you have any clue what the problem could be? What further inspection
is needed? Thank you.

What kind of noise? Honk? Squeak? Bang? Clicking? Boom? Rumble?
Screech? Whistle?

What does it sound like? Is it going "Hoi-Ho! Hoi-Ho!" If so, you have
a Wagnerian tenor stuck under your hood. You'd better get him out before
the Rhinemaidens come. This is more common with Mercedes and Audi vehicles,
though.

When turning sharply at first gear, it sounds like a broken fan. When
going uphill at 1 or 2 gear, it is like low rumbling. It sounds to me
like under the bottom of the car. Is it some axis or valve?

Thank you.

I'd check the bearings immediately. Might be something else, but that
has all the hallmarks of an impending bearing failure.

Sounds like it might also be a bad CV joint too, although in my (limited)
experience they usually only make noise while in a tight turn.

See if any of your neighbors are missing a cat.

Could be, and that's really the best thing it could be. If the CV joint
fails, that's annoying and you'll have to be towed. If the bearing fails,
that's a whole lot scarier and your chances of living through it are somewhat
lower.

Thank you all. Except the cat thing. :)

I remember the word CV joint now. Always wanted to know how to inspect
it but always forgot. I think I'll try to take a look of it first.

If it is CV joints, is it easy to replace it myself? Thank you.

Just called a mechanic, he said if it is CV joints, the axle and CV
joints must be both replaced, it that right?

Thank you.

Depends on the car. On some cars, that's the case. On other cars it
isn't. On some cars it's a lot easier (and therefore cheaper since you
are paying for labor) to do it that way, although you don't have to.

Since you haven't mentioned the kind of car it is, we don't even know if
it HAS any C-V joints.
