Any information about the year make and model would be great too. Otherwise,
no one can help. After all, not all cars have the same wiring.

Well gee, since we are playing guessing games I'll guess one of them goes to
B+, if you want a better answer from me you'll have to be a little more
specific on WTF kind of car you've got

it is very possible that the wire in question goes back to the battery
to allow for charging. If youre not sure put a volt meter on the bolt
that is sticking out and see if voltage is produced while the car is
running

Still talking about this car?
"i have a 1983 trans am with coustem built 350"

According to Autozone.com's online manual wiring diagram (bottom left)...
http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/large/0900823d80163fb 8.gif
Small brown to light (or gauge) and choke heater.
Black/red (or maybe all red?) directly to the starter.
Red to the starter through a fusible link.

This picture from Rockauto.com...
http://198.208.187.182/internet/PartImage.jsp?&acpartnbr =321-260
shows the back of what your alternator probably looks like.
The opening at the top is where the brown and one of the reds plug in.
The blue stud (rubber insulated) is where the other red goes, with a "ring" terminal
on the wire and a nut. The black bolt on the other side doesn't get a wire.
