starter and air conditioner [message #781478] Fri, 14 July 2006 16:35

My boss told me to turn off the A/C when I park the truck 'cause it
puts unneeded stress on the starter. I told him that didn't sound
right, and I was fairly certain axillary functions were shut off when a
car started.

He assured me that they did not.

After googling the subject, all I could find was a thread in this group
from last year:

"The compressor clutch, evaporator and condenser fans aren't energized
(on any car's I know of) while the key is in the 'Start' position
anyway. They're powered through the 'accessory' side of the switch, and
aren't activated until the key is released to 'run' position. Some even
have computer controlled 'delay' features. In reality, it doesn't make
a
whole lot of difference if you leave the A/C on or not when you shut
down/start up... "

Before I go back and argue me case, can this be confirmed by anyone?

Also, he only drives cars from the 70's. Was this a problem with cars
from that time period and prior?

All that being said, they are his trucks, so if he wants me to put a
banana on the motor after 6pm to improve the truck's karma...

Thanks,

Troy

The start position on any automotive electrics I have worked on is it's
own unique circuit. It even has a bypass to energize just the coil and
ignition circuits.

I know for sure on Jeep CJ's (the old ones), Wranglers and Cherokees
that no accessories are energized when the starter is running because I
have the wiring diagrams that clearly show where the power goes from the
'start' pin in the keyswitch. The starter wants 'all' the power.

Now if he wants low load on the engine when it is first at idle,
shutting off the AC would make a little sense... maybe.

The only way you can for sure argue the point would be to get the
keyswitch pinout and wiring in print. The Public Library has most auto
manuals, or it used to anyway, so you could photo copy the pages.

As you said, he is the boss and makes no difference what you think. Good
luck in your new job.

Nonsense.

If you would like to verify this watch the comprssor clutch while
someone else cranks the truck.

Even if the clutch were to be energized the drag is insignificant.
You could easily turn the compressor faster by hand than what it
turns at cranking speed.

Possibly some old vehicles engage the compressor while cranking but
even then its not a problem.

Err.... the banana goes in the tail pipe for best effect.
Good for at least 2/4 MPG. ;)

Yeah, he is the boss, but not right on this.

I used to have a girlfriend who was also anal
about many things automotive.

I was willing to comply because of the things she
brought to the party.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Of course, some of your replies remind me of something I tell my
daughters, "Sometimes it's better to be kind than to be correct".
However, in this case, it would be, "Sometimes it's better to be
employed than to be correct" :)

does the ac evaporator fan shut of when the key is engaged, if so, the
rest of the system does too.

Yeah, that's where it gets kinda' sad.

I said "Didn't you notice how the radio, lights, and A/C fan kick off
when you are starting the vehicle?"

His response was that, they are not being shut off, but rather the
battery is being drained so much by the starter, that they couldn't
operate.

Hi, to me this is a clear case of "are you SURE you want to prove the
boss wrong" or are you just wanting to be clear in your own mind.

Do as he asks , at least until your employment is secure and you know
him better.
