Could've been doing with one yesterday - knees, thighs and groin were
suffering.

Ah, the old thigh & groin massage - my speciality. Don't do knees
though - 'orrible things. I mean I'm sure they've got their place, but
let's face it, anywhere that close to the more 'interesting' parts is
never gonna get a look in.

OP then. It was the Thruxton mention that made me think of mechanical
devices.

That's my view on it as well.

Just got back from the seaside. It was lovely sitting outside a
nuclear reactor at 4am drinking cups of tea and smoking like a chimney
because I was worried about starting to glow in the dark.

Check out last week's horizon programme from the beeb. Either there is
something really astonishing there or you are seeing what happens when
someone is being bought off big style.

Certainly does and indeed did. Well, we finished, we weren't last and we
got a finisher's medal each to prove we did it :-)

I worked in one for a few years, fortunately it wasn't running at the
time.
From the sounds of things, Blur wants to build a few more of them too.

<grins> Ta - must admit my running buddy and I are well chuffed with how we
did. We may not have set any records, but to find that we (me at 39 and he
at 51) were not the slowest (by a long chalk) has certainly done our
confidence the world of good.

Thankyou - it wasn't too bad as we had an almost constant breeze and it's
pretty flat (apart from slight incline to grandstand). They also had 2 or 3
water stalls dotted around the track, which was good.
I'm pretty chuffed - we took just under the hour. With a bit more
dedication to our training than we've shown up till last week, we should
whittle that down a fair bit.

guys who'd worked at Chernobyl.

Apparently the used reactor sale starts within the next year as they
start to de-commission. It'll be interesting to see how much they're
willing to pay the poor fools that have to work on it.

I just watched one of the engineering progs on the science channel about
building a high-rise tower in Saudi. The workers were paid 35 USD per
week. That's fucking slavery that is.

We're seeing more labour coming in from Eastern Europe and working on
skilled jobs at a much reduced rate. I'm not convinced it's a good
idea because their work output isn't as good as the local labour but
overall it works out cheaper.

Exactly the same is happening in Dubai with the huge scale of
construction. Most of the workers are from the Indian sub continent and
are paid a comparative pittance but their food and accommodation is part
of the deal so they cannot afford to cause trouble. The rate of
depression, ill health and suicide is horrendous.
The Arabs are becoming a little concerned that the shiny image of a
tourist haven might be sullied if people knew the true cost of
constructing it.
It's not as if they don't have the bloody money to treat the workers
decently.

Yes, the timing of that is, um, interesting, to say the least.
Fancy that low-level radiation could even be good for us. The sort
that, say, a nuclear power facility might release.
With my less cynical head on I suppose one could argue that the
research may have happened first, and the results emboldened the Gov.
to have another look at nuke power.

Indeed.

I put a less cynical head on as well but it still seemed far too good to
be true. But it makes ya fink.

I heard an interesting statistic the other day, that 19% of the world's
tower cranes can be found in Dubai.
Place must be one massive building site.

Don't knock it.
As long as China keeps demanding more and more raw materials the price
of scrap steel keeps going up and that drags the value of your bike
collection along with it.
