FOAK : Sony laptop repairs [message #780064] Fri, 14 July 2006 17:46
Richard Wood
My Sony laptop was killed at work, I'm not exactly sure what killed it
but I suspect mains-like voltages being fed into its USB port didn't do
it a world of good :-(

I've read a few stories about Sony only authorising very few places to
repair their gear, and that its likely that they won't supply parts
outside this "dealer network", also a lot of worrying stories about
people having to wait months for parts required for repair.

If all thats true should I just take it to my local Sony Center, bend
over and lube up?

Or if there are good independant places that can fix it, anyone know of
any that are decent, reliable, quick turnaround and give you a good
warranty?

I've been trying to get a Vaio with a smashed screen fixed today.

http://www.laptopsrepair.co.uk/cgi-bin/showpage.fcgi
claims to fix them but I'm waiting for a reply on cost.
Sony want £484+VAT to repair it.

Sony are right cunts about laptop spares in the EU. In the US you can
buy pretty much whatever you want, reasonably cheaply.

If it's a reasonably common, couple of years old model, then a non
official repair place might have the parts, from scrapped machines or
sourced from the US. If you can find the US model name, then you might
even be able to get the parts yourself - no import duty on computer
spares. Google is your friend in both cases.

If it's a new or rare model Sony might be the only place. They do have a
5 day turn-around for simple replacement partss though.

No, it wouldn't...

We had a customer's Sony Vile repaired (case bits, keyboard & a few other
odds & sods) by http://www.laptopsrepair.co.uk - usual disclaimers apply.

VGN A197-VP

17" 1920x1200 screen, celeron something CPU, 512M RAM (as standard, its
got 1.25G in there now, tried to put 2G in it but it didn't like it),
80G HDD (now 120G, removed), DVD-RW (2x speed, they went to 8x speed 2
weeks after I bought it)

I doubt it'll be a common one, it was the one down from the top of the
range when I bought it, so Joe Public wouldn't have bought many, and I
imagine businesses would buy IBMs/Dells.

I've read that mobos are different between US & UK models.
