FOAK: Vehicle Leasing / Contract Hire [message #779960] Fri, 14 July 2006 13:18
CaneUKRM
We've always paid cash for our cars, driven them to death, thrown them
away and bought another. I'm beginning to wonder if leasing or hiring
might be a better option.

Does the FOAK have and thoughts, advise or suggestions.

NB: No fucking Mondeos.

I did a three year personal lease and it was a bloody rip off. Basically,
it's an expensive form of HP, and the lease company adds a huge amount for
service and repairs. Then they duck out of doing them.

Despite all the words they wrap around leasing, it is essentially taking
a loan to repay the depreciation on the motor between now and the end of
the lease. The snag is the initial price is often the manufacturers list
price and the interest rates are normally pretty shoddy.

When I ran the numbers it was better to throw down some cash, take a
personal loan for the difference and buy the car outright. I saved a
couple of k off list and the interest rate was 4.something on the
personal loan versus 8.something on the leasing deal.

The downside is I have savings tied up in the car, so I am losing out on
the interest I could be earning on that, but by the time you deduct the
tax and the lower interest rate on the savings account, you will
probably still be ahead.

The internet car brokers are offering some good deals, I will email you
details of the one I used to avoid accusations of spammage.

Why do we need "The worlds first and only Vehicle Leasing Company for
the gay and lesbian community"?

More to the point, why aren't we allowed the same thing for straights?

It's not *needed* but a large number of savvy capitalists have worked out
that what is colloqially called the pink pound is worth exploiting.

It's no different to SAGA targetting over 50s. Within both groups there are
significant numbers of people with a much higher level of disposable income
than the average person/family. The absence of parasitic children is common
to both groups and is of major significance.

I see that to an extent but we're taliking about cars here - a commodity
quite different to insurance and holidays (just 2 examples) where the
needs & desires of the over 50s differ to those of say a 30 year old.

Am I getting this wrong or are you confirming that it is merely a method
of trying to attract a sector of the market in way in which it hasn't
been done before - despite the product being indistinguishable?

Yes: they are focussing on a group who are likely to buy vehicles from a
premium marque and select those added value items that cream in the
commission e.g. posh paint, leather trim, warranties. Look at the top 6 in
their sales charts VW 4x4, Audis & BMWs.

It's a brand just like Virgin or Lidl. Advertising is focussed at a target
group to try to get them to spend more money than they had intially planned
to. They might wrap it up in a gay friendly, rainbow coloured shroud but is
just another marketing device not a support group.

What sort of gay car leasing company doesn't list a Jeep Wrangler?
