OT: Unknown phone number [message #779477] Thu, 13 July 2006 15:28
Kevin Stone
Hi,

I've just been rung by someone claiming to be British Gas, they knew my
name, address and phone number.

How do I go about finding out if the number was indeed British Gas?

Getting through takes ages, and then I don't suppose the call centre would
know anyway.

I was thinking of phoning BT instead.

Or just forgetting it. In hindsight I should have continued the conversation
long enough to see if it was a scam.

Not yet posting the number here as it's bad form to do so.

Huh?

If it is British Gas, it's a public phone number and as such should
already be public knowledge.

If it's not British Gas, it's somebody being naughty, and as such
deserves whatever's coming to them.

Done so, and it a odd type of engaged tone.

Why do you suspect it might not have been?

They were querying a new order I'd placed with them (which I hadn't), and I
asked 'How do I know you really are British Gas calling me', at this point
she made her excuses and hung up.

Very fishy.

Maybe them, maybe not, I seem to get a dozen or so calls a day from various
tossers claiming to be Microsoft, then they start the old marketting
questionaire thing ... till they get told to go away.

Ask BG to confirm the number is theirs?
