OT: How to describe Usenet / Google Groups to laymen [message #779165] Wed, 12 July 2006 20:38
Dan L
As per subject really.

I need to amend the wording on a witness statement, as the solicitor has
described Google Groups as a website [1]

TIA

[1] Which it is, I suppose, however, Usenet as an entity is much larger.

As you say, Google Groups *is* a web site. The term "Usenet" is I suspect
meaningless to most people, and "newsgroups" misleading. I would use
"discussion forum".

Care to share a little more context?

Regards, Ian

It's to do with the ongoing legal action against the loonies nextdoor but
one.

They posted to misc.legal a load of old crap about my next door neighbour,
that I happened to stumble across.
This now forms part of mine / SWMBO's witness statement for the impending
court case, and at the moment the witness statement reads as if the loonies
posted it to their own website on Google, rather than the far wider audience
that is Usenet.

How about describing it as...

The Google Groups interface to Usenet - which is the largest and most
widely used discussion forum on the Internet, established in 1980.

That's both accurate, and laymen friendly.
