Question on carb removal [message #778991] Mon, 17 July 2006 00:08
danl4X
Hi all. There's money on the bar. I suggest something with ice in it
as I am hot, hot, hot.

Now, first off I read the service manual and I asked the guys I know
that have Sportsters and HDs in general. None have ever removed a
carb...Sheesh, I'm embarrassed for them.

I was told there is an intake leak by the guys that put my new skins
on (Mittzlers)(sp) so I picked up all the nice new gaskets for the
carb and both intake ends. Also stuck in new plugs& wires. Got the
carb ready to yank and though it wiggles around I am not sure I should
just yank on it or use leverage. It could be just stuck to the gasket
or I might have missed something that is holding it tight to the
intake manifold. Also after looking at the gas line I am going to
replace that too.

As long as I got ya, which loc-tite is best?

Any help will bring another cold beverage of your choice. Damn
Shirley is the air working in here???

Be a lot easier to answer your question if we knew what kind of bike it is
.... if it's an evo with a CV , it will pop off . If it's an Ironhead or
Shovel , there's two bolts from the left side that hold it on ...

Might help if you spray something like WD40 on the gasket junction as you
wiggle and gently twist . It will eventually work it's way into the joint
and help unstick the carb.

Use Blue LocTite.

Hope he sees this before yanking and wiggling....

Watch the upper right side the throttle cable brackets will gash the fuck
out of the rocker cover. Up and down, not sideways.

Get a stubby 17mm and take loose the enrichener cable assy loose from the
motor mount. Be very careful tightening this as the plastic breaks with
very little pressure.
