OT kinda: Trip planning [message #778641] Fri, 14 July 2006 16:51

Shirley, can you get the house a round for me please while I solicit some
advice.

While sitting and fantasizing about a long trip to Eddie's (fantasying
cause, I got no funds, no time off left, and not enough experience for a
3000 mile trip), I used google maps to plan my fantasy trip.

I like google maps, and it created a nice run for me, but I wanted to build
in some detours, and take some different routes than it recommended.

Is there an online (or very cheap program) that will allow me to do
this..customize a route?

Thanks,
jojo

I use MS Streets and Trips, usually available at Costco for fairly
cheap. It lets you set "avoid zones" which will route you around an
area. Once you have a route figured out you can drag the route from one
road to another to get onto your preferred road.

You can also set all the places you want to see along the trip, then
using the route planner you can put those in whatever order you want and
it will figure out directions. It can install on your smartphone or pda
also and you can download your maps to your phone.

Another pot of coffee.......I took two weeks off so I could
ride last week and finish some "projects" this week......I'm
now about wore out. Time for breakfast, wife and I'll hit
the early movie matinée......just in time for a 1230
appointment for new tires for her truck.

Know what you mean. I was getting into the "trying to
convince the Mrs. that we needed a trip to Ohio" mode (we've
got tons of family back there) when her brother called me to
let me know our long planned trip through the Rockies in
Colorado was coming together.....couldn't do both
trips...<frown>. So I spent all last week criss crossing the
mountain passes of the Rockies.....it was frikkin great.

Don't know why ya say you don't have enough experience for a
3000 mile trip....if you can do 200 miles, you can do 3000.
Just need to be able to climb on the bike and go when it's
time.....every time....<sfsf>.

Microsoft Streets and Trips???? I didn't buy it, came with
my PDA......versions a couple years old, but it still goes
out looking for updated road information when I use it. It
runs about $39.

I use Mapquest sometimes too......I'll compare the
routes....<sfsf>

Ya gotta be careful with these kinda programs, try to baby
the software with plenty of checkpoints (where you want to
stop) otherwise they often route you through some weird
places you may not want to go at all. The software doesn't
solve the "problem" you give it.....it offers solutions it's
already got. Kinda what Redbeard means when he says we're
often fucked over by our own technology.......

Never had to use that, but I tend to pick routes that take
me through BFE......

I took my laptop along on this last trip.....fit's perfect

Yeah well I don't have a barge yet, so the smartphone w/internet access
will have to do. Did you try TL's method of getting a room at Day's Inn?

I did pick up the detachable tour pak for my Heritage, tried it last
weekend on my trip. Not as much capacity as my T-bag but a lot more user
friendly. Now I just need to wire in a cigarette lighter someplace (for
my phone)

I like that.

I'm looking at Tbags when I need them. And yeah, I'll be taking my laptop on
a trip this long.
Some freinds of mine went on a trip through arazona, new mexico and utah a
couple months past, and it was great. I got to go "vicariaously" because
whenever they stayed in a hotel (there was some camping involved)
They would catch me up, send me pics and great stories of their adventures
so far.

Thanks for the advice!

Get this,
A) Inline Lighter Receptacle.
and this:
H) Two-Way Flat Connector

Make it long enough to fit in the saddlebag, or tour pack, or stick it in
your pocket.

Haven't had to try TL's thing yet......on the Colorado trip,
the other couple (beside my in-laws) were from Durango (own
the dealership there)......and were really familiar with all
the places we were going (and did all the route planning).

It was nice to show up in a town to find out the gal had
booked our rooms weeks in advance. Especially nice since it
was the 4th of July holiday week and most everything was
frikkin booked.

My contribution to the trip was my AARP membership, I'd step
up to the counter, present my card, and get a 10% to 20%
rate reduction for all of us.....<sfsf>. Discount on one
night in a motel more than pays for the $12 annual
membership fee.

Well.......I love the storage on the barge, but still do the
add on thing.

My left saddlebag holds tools, raingear, extra gloves,
sweatshirt, and my gun (in states where I can't open
carry...or if my riding companions are nervous about riding
while I'm packing) if I'm riding alone out in BFE.

Right saddlebag holds a cooler (ice, water, gatorade and
granola bars (so they don't melt), sunblock, camera,
shoptowels, ballcap, plastic bags, duct tape, big bottle of
Tylenol, extra gloves.

Tourpack holds most of my clothes (in a nifty bag from
Harley, came with the bike, that fits just right), meds I
need to carry with, shaving (and washing) gear, the laptop,
and odds and ends like cellphone, bandannas, goggles, pocket
knife, glove liners.

Then I've got a small bag (kinda like an airline carryon) I
put the rest of my clothes in (turns into a laundry hamper
the longer I'm on the road).....straps onto the luggage rack
of the tourpack (or sits in the rear seat if the luggage
rack needs to hold a sleeping bag, tent, and air mattress. I
tend to carry a couple different jackets (leather for when
it's cold, mesh for when it's warmer) and strap the one I'm
not wearing someplace......

Finally found a great use for the storage in the lower
fairing.......I stuff them chock full of bungee cords (ya
never know).

I've got a windshield bag too.......center compartment is
for the XM radio.....let holds my glasses, right holds my
inhaler (I'm just a little asthmatic) and gum.....<sfsf>

The lighter on my barge is pretty useless....it's down low
in the fairing. If I plug a charger for my phone into
it....it interferes with turns, hits the tank, etc. I'll
need to see about relocating it somewhere else (or just
installing another one.....<sfsf>. I've always been able to
find a place to plug my phone in overnight so I've never
really needed it though.

Having the laptop along (with a multi-card reader) on this
last trip was frikkin great....allowed me to download
everyone's cameras at night to get a look at the pics we'd
taken....then to post some across the street, and to mail
some off to family while the stuff was still fresh for us.

Yup, that's the stuff I'm looking for. I've got the pigtail for Gerbings
already wired in towards the rear for my wife's liner, mebbe I can use
the adapter for that to plug the lighter into, then zip tie it up the
rack and into the tour pak.

Next one on me.

I just got my sons 2006/2007 school schedule and between
thanksgiving, christmas, and spring break (not to mention every holiday ever

I do great in my little 500 mile radius, although I still avoid downtown
dallas and houston all together. I traveled them all over the years by cage,
but the roads never traveled....not too secure yet. When my friends got back
from their trip (mentioned in another post, this thread) they told me that
there were some roads and some weather conditions that they endured, that I
would not have been able to handle.
When I do make it to Eddie's, as I someday hope to, I'm hoping there will be
veterans on the road to drop into formation with, for at least some of the
trip. I'm certinaly not too proud to say, "take me under your wing, I'm
clueless"..<sfsf>

I'm just dreaming here, but I'd like to head up through Tennessee (my old
stomping grounds), on up and do the Dragon (If I tried it today, I'd kill
myself, but after I first saw the pictures, that damn run has been
whispering in my head ever since. Hell, I still haven't had the nerve to do
the tiny little baby dragon from Austin to marble falls yet (1431) and
yet..the Dragon whispers....) on up to Fredericksburg via skyline drive,
then to RI, on up to Massachusetts, then over to Eddies. Dream run for me
right now. Hence the search for software to map all of the intricate
details.

Sorry, I'm rambling. Let me get ya a fresh cup. It's obvious the 1) I wanna
be on my bike right now and 2) I wanna escape reality for a while...

Oh well, dreams can't come true unless you pursue them...

Fins,

Did you get the pricey H-D, leather (?) covered tour-pak? I've often
thought about it, but the $700 price tag was prohibitive. I've looked
at some cheaper sportbike models (generic) that would work, but aren't
nearly as asthetic. However, they are at least under $100. I'd only use
it on long trips where function supercedes form. The H-D model would
also require me to change to a different luggage rack than the one I
have. I do like the looks of the H-D unit though. I've seen it on a
couple of Heritages.

I TOTALLY agree with Fins.
I have been using Streets & Trips for four years. (sure beats
mapquest)
Costco has the basic for $30. Comes with a $15 rebate from MS so the
end cost is $15.
It was pretty much is right on accurate as far as time / distance is
concerned as long as you dial in your rest stops.
On the 2005 version I have, some of the gas station info was out of
date, but I suspect the 2006 version may be a little more accurate.
Found a website that had a lot more gas stations listed.

This might come in handy for those with smaller tanks.
I'm riding to Jellystone this year (leaving Aug 12th) and I'm taking
my laptop with me. It has a big screen but it fits in my T-Bag just
fine.

Veterans and newbies alike hit the road for EKIII from all over, so finding
someone going your way shouldn't be hard, if someone to follow is what it
takes. We TX folks certainly won't record the longest journey there.

Life happens. All you have to do is put yer foot down, and say "I'm doing
this. Take the kids, feed my dogs, answer my calls. I'll be AWAY." Turn the
key. It's a good destination. And a good cause.

And take my word for it. It doesn't get easier as you get older. Well,

Yes I did, but I got it from Chicago HD and saved about 200 bucks on the
combination of rack and bag. Every other place, even obline, wanted
catalog price for it but Chicago as usual had em all beat.

I've been using Zanotti's H-D for online orders for a while. They frequently
have better prices than Chitown H-D and the service has been excellent thus
far. YMMV.

Thanks for the IPA Jojo. If you are a member of HOG they have a very

A very good savings indeed ... but still too pricey for me at this
point in time. I'll have to look at your rack and see how it differs
from mine as far as fitment to the touring trunk.

I love my T-bag... Had it since '97. The little pocket that slips

it back to them and got a brandie new one back (free) before the next

My dad does the same thing now (he's 84 and can no longer ride - but

build a slide show with music, pictures and video on a dvd for him so
