First Mini Ride Report [message #778025] Sat, 15 July 2006 22:43

... I finally got around to putting the XR back together enough to take
it for a short spin.I am talking totally half assed..wires just
hanging ..the new CDI box velcroed to the frame..gas tank bolts finger
tight..seat not even bolted down. Hop on and kick and kick and kick
and kick and kick..no start..Great..lost the spark again..pull
everything back off ..even down to letting the wires hang completely
loose..hop on it again...3rd time fires right up...this time I leave
it running as I put everything back together.Bike is idling very very
high and wont turn down ..so something is stuck in the carb..no biggy.
push it outside the garage..get on it and take off...its been a long
long time since I rode any Honda..Felt good...forgot how good Hondas
feel.
Because the idle is so high putzing around the yard was pretty
easy..took about 15 laps to get used to riding again..Damn this bike
feels so big..But its alot of fun!.
Now I pick it up abit (y'all know for me that isnt much) and put it
in second and weehooo..Bike seems to have good power ....OK judging it
against an XR100. And I spent about an hour just running laps around
the yard.getting on the throttle when we get to the "sand pit" in the
yard...tearing up the grass...oops I mean...airating the lawn.

I finally stop and hand over the controls to Tommy and he takes it
for a short spin..seemed to like it..y'all know he wont admit to
liking anything but Suzuki.I talk a 15 minute break..go back out to
ride some more and came to a conclusion...The XR is too big for me..I
try to kick it over (every other time the seat has not been on the
bike) and can't get a good enough kick to start it..One time the bike
and myself fell over. Shit thats a heavy bike.I have this rule..if you
cant kick start your bike its too big..
OK now I am frustrated and thats bad since I quit smoking 6 months
ago!!! put the bike back in the garage and tell Tommy its going up
for sale..I can't start it so its too big...then I came in here and
typed this..
Well at least I had a small taste of riding again

I've been so happy reading these reports, but this last revelation
was somewhat depressing. This little XR 200 seemed (to me) a perfect
upgrade from the 100, has real suspension (compared to the 100), the
price was right and it was looking to need very little in the way of
repairs.

I guess what bothes me most is that you may not get enough from the
sale of a 1986 XR-200 to find a suitable replacement? And damnit I was
enjoying your renewed excitement!

I can start my RM-250 on level ground with little trouble, but I
still like the extra leverage of being against my truck bed or a
tree... makes things so much easier. And you can usually find a high
spot or tree out on the trail that'll give you that tiny bit of extra
leverage that may be just enough. Don't give up on the XR just yet!

And when you get the carb cleaned up and properly adjusted, along
with the wiring re-taped and everything tightened down, I'll bet you
don't have near as much frustration as you're feeling right now.

Of course all of this is easy for me to say at 5'10". Connie, have
you measured the static seat height on the XR yet? I'd like to know
how tall it is.

I am just frustrated...thats all...Tommy can get on the bike and 1 or
2 kicks ..starts it fine...I have to take the seat off and even then
can't get it to start.
Maybe once I get the carb worked out it may be easier...just seems
like I can't get a good enough "kick" to get it going. I think maybe
when I repair the seat about taking 1 1/2 -2 inches out of the seat
foam....plus it needs a new kick starter bad...the little ball and
spring thingy is gone and it just flops around....so not the safest..

The seat heigth on the XR200 is around 36 inches at its lowest
point...and I am 5'4"

I wont give up on the XR200 yet...they are special to me..I just
dont have the money to dump into it like I did with my XR100.
I should just be happy I got it running so easily...my old 100 took me
forever..and then it still needed rings and when that was done just
one disaster after another.

Thanks for the concern!

Doesn't it have a kickstand? Can you stand on thepegs while resting it
on the kickstand?

What he said, put the kickstand down and stand up on it.
