| Magneto coil failure, a question for the techincal ones [message #777988] |

I have read this group for years and have been amazed at some of the in
depth answers to odd questions, this is mine.
What could cause a "magneato coil, source coil, current coil", it goes by
different names but not the little "pick-up coil, trigger coil", to go
bad?" It has open windings".
Its on a 1990 yz490, cdi ignition with no apperant physical damage to
the magneato coil and no moisture around it.
The only thing done previous was to richen the jetting up a lot,"up 10
on the main and 5 on the pilot".
It may have fouled the plug and then failed or failed first.
Engine to frame ground is good.
All replies welcome as i have a new coil coming and dont want a
re-peat.
Do these just get old?
Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

You said the windings were open. Correct? Were they potted? Encased in
epoxy? Reason I ask is that we had nearly a decade of transformers going
bad at Tektronix that failed because the brown colored epoxy would crack
with age and allow moisture enter and reducing the efficiency of the
transformer. Things would run so inefficiently that they would blow the
appropriate fuse after 20 minutes of operation. Replacement of the
tranformers with ones encased in a silastic compound cured the problem.
Maybe it could affect motorcycles as well.

The winding was a very fine wire that had a amber colored coating on it
and when you tried to un-do the wire, it would only pull a little bit
before breaking.
The entire winding was covered with a tape that looked like that tape
you use for bandages and was also covered with that amber coating.
I tried to un-do the wire to look for burn marks, but did not see any,
but it was "open" some where inside.
I didn't see any signs of water,"no rust or moisture present",but i
didn't pull the cover till a few days later and it could have
evaporated.
Your reply did help as i didn't know the coating could break down.
It is a air cooled 490 and vibrates like a pig.

It probably just failed from age, engine vibration, and
heat. Since it isn't encapsulated, you could probably get it
rewound. Here's a good place to look:

They were unable to repair the stator from my GasGas which is exactly
the same as a KTM. They wasted my time, but did give me a full refund
including 1/2 the total shipping.
Jack Bondus, who will be at the Spodefest, is a GasGas dealer in MN.
He was kind enough to loan me a brand new stator so I could race the
National enduro. With Smackover Motorsports closed up, Jack is now my
GasGas dealer.

Vibration related failures kill most of them.

From what I understand of those bikes, that's a feature not a bug.
Good luck with the stator!
