Too bloody right. I refuse to do any work with 98 any longer, and for quite
some time.

Does that mean it's officially out of beta then?

Yeah, hopefully this will free up some support staff to tackle my
Windows 3.1 problems.

Q1. Why won't it run properly on my Compaq 386 luggable unless I
install an external graphics card and VGA monitor? It's got an orange
plasma screen option, but it doesn't seem to work.

Have you tried upgrading to WfW?

Good plan - then I could play "Hearts"[1], at least.

[1] When I learned this game, using real, old-fashioned cards it was
called "Hunt the Cunt". Why didn't Microsoft adopt that name? Some
kinds of trademark problem?

It's running fine on my Compaq 286 luggable.

Perhaps your hardware is too advanced.

Possibly - I've got a Compaq 286SLT as well, but that won't even run DOS 5
.... probably something to do with it only having 512Kb of RAM.

The luggable, OTOH, is top end kit ... 4Mb RAM, 110MB hard disk, maths
co-processor, the works. It will run Windows fine, but only if, as I say,
you stick a graphics card in and run it through an external monitor. Stick
with the built in orange plasma screen and it just doesn't want to know.

Like most of the people reading this, I'd imagine.

As well as 98 & 98SE the winderful Wondoes Millenium Edition has been
officially struck off of the register - thank god.

Take note that XPSP1 is also in its death throws, this may have an impact on
those people who for whatever reason cannot upgrade to SP2.

Seems a lot longer.... I was working for Balfour Beatty then as an
Ops/Programmer on an ME29.

I remember seeing Win 286 and thinking "Pretty, could be used for games"
and went back to the DRS300 using C/DOS
