OT: VHS capture to disk: Sound synch issues [message #775839] Tue, 11 July 2006 13:11

Listen, oh FOAK, our FOAK is unique.....

I have a sweet little PVR / video capture card in my PC which I intended
to archive many old VHS tapes to our media server.

It's fine for anything up to about 30 mins, but for a full movie, by the
end the sound is about 2 seconds out of synch with the video.

I can't seem to find any combinations of settings that improve the
situation, so what's at fault? The PC has *loads* of spare power, RAM
and disk space. I can only assume it's the software.

Suggestions?

might be useful if you told us what the software actually is...

Does it capture uncompressed video, or does it do some kind of
compression (xvid, divx etc.) on the fly?

Might be worth trying to capture it uncompressed first (uses loadsa
disk, so make sure you have plenty). Then run it through a compression
program. Eg I think virtualdub will do it. Alternatively you can play
around with virtualdub also I think and stretch or compress the audio
as appropriate for 2 seconds over the duration. It's a pain, and easier
if you can capture it right first time.

www.videohelp.com is a good source of info.

Pass. There are plenty of options.

Currently trying to grab to avi. Would that count as un-compressed?

Not necessarily. Avi's can be uncompressed too. Somewhere there might
be an option to select the codec. One of them should be 'no
compression' or similar.

Doesn't VirtualDub correct those sort of issues, by rebuilding indices?

Right. AVI made it worse. I'm trying with a copy of Ulead that I have
as well now.

We shall see

Ta.

I believe you can stretch / compress the audio but it' sounds a bit of a
PITA IYSWIM.
