misfirings after mech "fixed" my car... '90 geo storm... [message #765570] Mon, 12 June 2006 18:32

okay.... i have been driving this '90 geo storm [used] for 5-6 months
w/o any problems...

two weeks ago, the car would not start after it had been driven about
20 minutes and sitting [warm/hot oklahoma weather] ... it did start
after about 1 hour [and much fidgeting around in hood, reseating,
etc...] then it died while driving about ten minutes.... sat for about
1 hour, then ran okay for about ten minutes, and died.... towed it to a
shop....

a mech found the pickup module in the distributor bad [it died on him]
and replaced this... the car has started and run since then....

however, now.... it seems like the car does not have the "pep" it had
before.... and it seems to misfire in higher gears, under load, up a
hill, etc.... i also need to downshift going up the same hills i have
been driving...

to me, it seems that the timing has been set a teeny bit "advanced"...

the car starts and runs okay.... except in higher gears, under load...

your thoughts and comments please! thx!

What is it doing that leads you to the above conclusion?

And, how can you "feel" a "teeny bit" ?

Advanced timing could be the cause. Or it could be the air fuel mix is
too lean. I assume when you say "misfire" you really mean pinging or
detonation (an audible rattling) and not lurching or hesitation.

If it has lost power & timing is a teeny bit off, I'd suspect it was a
teeny bit retarded rather than a teeny bit advanced. s

You description of the symptoms leaves a lot to be desired, but it seems
obvious that the technician who removed the distributor to replace the pick
up coil did not adjust the timing correctly after the repair. Return it to
him for proper adjustment.
