Help with research [message #764377] Sun, 04 June 2006 12:44
ian.hughes
Hi there,

I run an independent research company that is looking for Bikers to
answer a short questionnaire about them and their bikes. We will use
the information to help us understand the motorcycle market and drive
down the cost of insurance. We have been doing this successfully for
the last 2 years in the motor car market where we have watched prices
fall. But no one is keeping an eye on the motorcycle market.

Everyone that fills In the survey will be entered into a prize draw to
win =A3100 but, more significantly, will be sent our research on which
companies provide the cheapest bike insurance. We are not being paid
ourselves for this research, we are just trying to find out more in
order to help improve competition.

If you can spare 5 minutes of your time to fill in this questionnaire,
i would appreciate it.

Question 1) Do you DRIVE a motorbike?

I think you need to do a bit more research into all of this riding

Clearly, useless, and that's why we are doing the research, the
question has now been changed. Thanks for the input.

Opening line, first paragraph:
"Very little research is done into who drives motorbikes".

Needs work, I'm afraid - as does your posting style. Should you reply
again, it would be nice if you conformed to convention and placed your
reply beneath the text to which you are replying, having snipped any
irrelevant text and signatures.

I've snipped and moved your text above in accordance.

It would be less misleading if you made it clear in your posts that we
wouldn't actually be winning £100, but £100 of 'shopping' vouchers.

Apologies, clearly different conventions in different forums that I
use. However your comments are greatly appreciated.

To the comment about the =A3100, yes it is in shopping vouchers, because
that's the most easiest way to do it.

If anyone has anymore they are also welcome to chip in.

That's a good point, the main reason we would need the information
would be to send you the vouchers if you win. As a research company we
don't use that information for anything other than the purpose stated.

-----------------------
The Requested Survey ID could not be found.
There could be multiple reasons for not finding the survey :-

* The URL to the Survey is incorrect (The URL Should Contain the
Survey ID)
* The Owner of the Survey has deleted the survey off the system
* The Survey itself has been De-Activated
------------------------

That showed up at 37% completion.

Stuff it: if you're going to piss around, then forget it.
Get it right first time.

Incorrect. There has been a new entrant to the motorcycle insurance market
that has resulted in greatly reduced premiums across the board. I'm sure
this new entrant monitored the market extensively before pitching in.

There are 3 insurance companies here that recently began to offer
motorcycle policies.

Did some one say ebike? Briliant lot, saved me over £100 on my Bandit 1200
and included breakdown cover.

It a guess, they'd be High St. vouchers which can be used in loads of
shops anyway. Not as good as cash, but not all that bad.

Yeah, but surely only a name and address are needed to post the
vouchers to, not name, address, telephone number, work telephone
number, evening telephone number, mobile phone number, email
address...

I don't see what you need the information for. Surely the insurance
companies already know all of the information you are asking of us
anyway.

Plus it appears that you've just taken a car questionaire and put
replaced "car" with "motorcycle" - for example "is yours a company
motorcycle?" doesn't normally apply to a bike as much as a car does.

Agreed, it's might be a little over the top, but the survey is used in
a variety of different ways.

The personal information we need to send you the vouchers. We also
need to be able to prove that the people who answered the survey are
real people, should we ever be challenged about our research. If we
had a load of random infomration in there we would drop those
responses.

Good point, we included the question for a really good reason, it's a
control for the previous two questions. Believe it or not 2 people
have answeeed yes to the question already. Believe me, it makes no
sense to me either.

Thanks for the input Dave, that's a first and we have had loads of
people answer the survey so far. I wish I could explain it, I will
check your responses and see if I can get to the bottom of it.

They may have checked the prices but our research so far shows that 75%
of people get ripped off for their insurance because they don't know
that they can buy cheaper.

We will be using the information from this survey to help drive down
the price of insurance generally.

Thanks for the input.

Currently our research shows that ebike is a long way from the cheapest
company!!!! In fact they are the second most expensive. One of the
reason for collecting more information about the market is to find out
whether this is because we are using the wrong sort of profiles to
mystery shop them with or whether the problem is caused because bikers
just don't shop around as much as they should do.

If you want to know the real cheapest company then fill in the survey
and we will send you a copy of the report.

With a bike policy in your "About your insurance policy" section,
you've got "Guaranteed Courtesy Car" instead of "Guaranteed Courtesy
Bike."

I have had a look at your survey and it requests far too much personal
information. I have a strong dislike of surveys or websites where you
have to provide all of your personal information for no apparent reason.
I don't buy your argument about needing it to be able to send the
vouchers - especially as you can opt out of the prize. Doing this does
not change the questions asked when in reality it should.

I don't actually care about ebike or whether they are cheapest or not. I
hate dealing with insurance companies and hate the hassle of renewal in
order to save a few quid. It is the most customer unfriendly industry I
have ever come across. Your survey simply confirms this.

BGN is showing a little ignorance. Company motorcycles are not uncommon.
Some vehicle leasing companies offer packages for motorcycles. They are
also popular with self employed people servicing clients in city centres.
In rural areas, farmers can quite legitimately put a trail bike through the
books.

BTW, Ian, when replying please include the attributions so we can fathom
out who you are replying to. I've manually added an attribution for BGN
above.

Most bike policies will have a guaranteed courtesy car written into
them.

Easy mate, those exclamation marks are expensive. It'll make my premium
go up next year. In all seriousness, you have been asked to keep the
attributions in place when making a response to a prior posting.

Just wanted to thank everyone who filled in the questionnaire so far
and also thank all those who have given input about the questions.
